A rumored OpenAI AI phone is starting to feel less like a distant idea and more like a coming product window, with Misryoum reporting that the company may be pushing toward a faster schedule.
In this context. Misryoum says OpenAI is now targeting mass production for its first AI phone in the first half of 2027. a shift from earlier expectations.. The same reporting also frames the push as part of a broader effort to lock in a foothold in “AI agent” devices. where phones are expected to do more than run apps. instead helping users act on information.
That matters because the first wave of AI phones is likely to be judged not by benchmarks, but by how reliably the device can interpret what it sees and respond with less friction. If the timeline really is accelerating, competition could heat up sooner than many people expect.
MediaTek is now described as the leading processor supplier for the device. with Qualcomm previously mentioned but apparently no longer the front-runner.. The chip, as described in the rumor, would prioritize AI and vision features over traditional “raw speed” metrics.. A key role is attributed to a dual-NPU design intended to handle different AI workloads more efficiently. while an upgraded image pipeline is said to focus on HDR sensing to improve how the phone understands its surroundings.

Misryoum notes that OpenAI has not commented publicly about making a phone. or about any of the hardware details circulating around it..
