Cubs’ One-Hit Night vs Braves Marks Tough Stretch

Cubs Braves – Alex Bregman homered, but the Cubs managed just one hit in a 5-2 loss to the Braves, snapping momentum amid a skid.
ATLANTA — The Cubs showed a brief spark when Alex Bregman sent a home run over the fence in the fourth inning. but their bats never truly caught up after that as they fell 5-2 to the Braves at Truist Park.. By the time the game ended. Bregman’s homer was the only hit the Cubs could mount against a Braves lineup that has powered its way to the best record in the National League.
The scoring swing started in the fourth when Bregman’s blast cut through an otherwise bleak offensive stretch. ending a scoreless run that had stretched to 23 innings.. Even with that moment of life. the Cubs were quickly pushed back as Atlanta surged in the fifth. turning a 2-1 Cubs lead into a decisive gap.. On home runs by Austin Riley and Mike Yastrzemski. the Braves plated four runs in the inning. effectively taking control of the contest.
Tuesday’s matchup carried more than just playoff-style intensity.. Before the game. the Braves honored two franchise legends. former owner Ted Turner and former manager Bobby Cox. who both died within days of each other last week.. The ceremony added a reflective tone to an otherwise urgent night for both teams. but the scoreboard still told the story: Atlanta’s offense struck hardest when it mattered.
Riley’s home run arrived early in the fifth. coming on the first pitch of the frame from Cubs starter Colin Rea.. Rea, though, had navigated danger at other points.. In the second inning. center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong made a leaping catch. and in the third. second baseman Nico Hoerner pulled off a diving stop that helped keep the Cubs within striking distance.
The inning that broke the game open continued after a single by Dominic Smith. one of four hits Smith finished with.. Then Yastrzemski delivered his first homer in a Braves uniform after 119 at-bats. crushing a slider that hung in a hittable spot.. Rea later described the at-bat as one where the Braves appeared to be finding comfortable timing and contact. saying Yastrzemski battled and fouled off pitches before punishing a mistake.
Bregman’s homer offered a counterpoint. but it was also a reminder of how difficult this period has been for the Cubs’ offense.. In his recent form. Bregman had shown signs of getting back on track. yet his power output had been limited over a longer stretch.. The home run into the visitors’ bullpen came off Grant Holmes. but after that moment. the Cubs struggled to turn opportunity into sustained pressure.
Following Bregman’s blast, the Cubs nearly strung more together.. Holmes walked the next three batters to load the bases, setting up a high-leverage chance.. Still. Atlanta responded with a defensive play that deflated the inning: Braves shortstop Ha-Seong Kim. making his first appearance of the season after dealing with an injury earlier this year. fielded Moises Ballesteros’ ground ball and converted it into a force play at second.. Dansby Swanson then struck out to end the inning, leaving the Cubs without additional runs.
The Braves’ pitching followed a familiar script after that burst.. Holmes departed after the fourth, and Didier Fuentes followed by throwing three scoreless innings.. Dylan Lee and Raisel Iglesias then closed things out efficiently. retiring the Cubs in sequence to preserve the lead and finish the game in Atlanta’s favor.
For the Cubs. the loss continued a rough run in which their offense has produced fewer threats and fewer hits than their earlier results had promised.. Although the team had previously reeled off a 10-game winning streak that was itself followed by a stretch of three straight losses. this latest slide has been marked by limited production across recent defeats.. In each of their last three games. all losses. the Cubs managed only eight hits total. with totals dropping as the streak went on.
Bregman, reflecting after the game, pointed to the difference between outcomes and process.. He said multiple teammates squared the ball and hit it hard in different areas. even though the results did not always follow.. He also cautioned against focusing too heavily on the number of hits in the box score. saying baseball requires showing up and trusting repetition.
Meanwhile, the Cubs’ lineup decisions also drew attention.. After Bregman’s homer and the Braves’ response, one of the notable shifts centered on Ballesteros behind the plate.. Earlier in the season. Ballesteros had caught in two games. but Tuesday marked only the second time this season that he was positioned as the catcher.. The choice came after the Cubs used Carson Kelly to catch all three games in Texas against the Rangers. including a day game played after a night game.
Miguel Amaya. who usually shares catching duties with Kelly. missed that Rangers series due to tightness in his back but was available for Tuesday night.. Still. manager Craig Counsell opted to start Ballesteros instead of using him to spell Kelly as had been done earlier. even while acknowledging Ballesteros has been dealing with his own hitting slump.. Ballesteros was credited with an RBI on a fourth-inning fielder’s choice. but his recent line remains difficult. with just two hits over his last 39 at-bats.
Counsell said the decision factored in lineup balance, specifically the desire to add additional left-handed bats. In addition to Ballesteros, Michael Conforto was also part of the plan, though Conforto went hitless as designated hitter in the game.
The defeat leaves the Cubs facing the immediate challenge of resetting quickly.. They and the Braves will not meet again in the near term. but the Cubs do have a different kind of rivalry on deck: they are set to travel to Guaranteed Rate Field for the first round of the Crosstown Showdown with the White Sox this weekend.
Beyond the major-league matchup, baseball’s calendar also carries a separate kind of momentum.. Almost 59 years after Ted Turner named himself manager. and six days after he died at age 87. the game served as a reminder of how history stays intertwined with the sport’s current moments.. And while pro teams wrestle with streaks. college baseball offers its own storyline: the Division III Maroons are gearing up for the NCAA Tournament. ending a long wait in Hyde Park for a conference championship that had stretched more than a century without one.
