Nigel Farage Faces Probe Over Undeclared £5m Gift

Nigel Farage is under formal investigation by the UK Parliamentary Standards Commissioner for allegedly failing to declare a £5m gift tied to election preparations.
Nigel Farage is facing a formal investigation into whether he breached parliamentary rules after a reportedly undeclared £5 million gift linked to his security costs.
The probe will be conducted by the UK Parliamentary Standards Commissioner, who is set to determine whether Farage violated the House of Commons Code of Conduct by failing to properly declare a gift from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne.
The matter centers on timing and disclosure.. Farage reportedly received the gift in the weeks before he announced he would seek election as a parliamentary candidate in the 2024 general election.. The investigation will examine whether the circumstances surrounding acceptance of the payment required it to be declared under parliamentary declaration rules.
Farage has said he believed disclosure was not necessary because the funds were intended to cover his own personal security costs.. In other words. his position is that the payment was tied to protection arrangements rather than political activity or campaigning in a way that would trigger the same declaration obligations as other forms of support.
The potential consequences of the inquiry could be significant if regulators determine the rules were breached in a particularly serious way. Under parliamentary standards procedures, a finding could lead to Farage being suspended from the House of Commons.
Such a suspension carries knock-on political effects. If an MP is suspended for 10 days or more, it can trigger a recall petition and potentially force a by-election, turning a standards case into an immediate electoral test.
Reform UK figures have defended Farage’s approach.. Asked about the gift on the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg Show on Sunday. Reform deputy leader Richard Tice said Farage was not involved in politics at the time the gift was accepted. adding that Farage had complied with the applicable laws and rules as he understood them.
Tice also framed the payment as motivated by safety concerns. He said he trusted Farage’s judgment and argued that the person who provided the gift was determined to ensure Farage was “safe and secure.”
The scrutiny comes as Reform UK continues to build momentum in parts of the UK electorate. The party won more than 1,400 councillors across England in last week’s local elections. It also placed second in the Welsh Senedd election and joint second with Labour in Scotland.
For Reform UK, the inquiry raises the stakes beyond the immediate legal question of disclosure.. A standards finding could affect Farage’s standing in Parliament and potentially set off election mechanics if suspension rules are applied. while the party’s recent electoral gains make public scrutiny of any controversy especially consequential.
