NBA Draft Lottery: Inside the drawing room

Inside the secret NBA draft lottery, plus playoff updates and Erling Haaland’s World Cup countdown for 2026.
A single bouncing ball can reshape an entire franchise’s future, and one day each year the NBA leans into that unpredictability behind closed doors.
The NBA draft lottery is widely seen as one of the most consequential dates on the league calendar.. For teams that finish near the bottom of the standings. the wait ends when the lottery draws determine the draft order—sometimes after a long season of defeats. and potentially deliberate sacrifices to improve odds.. The process. which plays out through a mix of chance and carefully controlled procedures. is designed to decide who gets the first pick and how the rest of the top selections line up.
Inside the drawing room, representatives from each of the 14 lottery teams take part in the ceremony.. NBA officials and members of the media are also present. seated to the side of the plastic drum where the combinations will be drawn. with the goal of maintaining transparency in a process that all parties view as high-stakes.
A sealed briefcase holds 14 ping-pong balls, numbered 1 through 14.. Those balls are then loaded into a plastic drum built by Smartplay International, a company known for lottery machinery.. An official timekeeper is positioned so they face away from the drum. a deliberate step intended to reduce any suggestion of bias.
Once the drum starts and the balls begin to move. the timekeeper waits 20 seconds before signaling that it is time to draw.. After the first ball is selected, subsequent balls are taken every 10 seconds.. The sequence matters because each team’s fate is tied to the specific combination produced through that series of draws.
The Washington Wizards won the first pick, receiving the combination of numbers 4, 2, 1 and 13.. Team President Michael Winger. who brought a photo of his family for good luck. remained composed throughout the call. but the selection itself was the kind of moment lottery teams wait all season to reach.
While the draft lottery is about what comes next. the NBA playoffs are already delivering what some matchups never do: momentum that swings from game to game.. In Round 2, two series have felt one-sided so far.. The New York Knicks swept the Philadelphia 76ers in four games. while the Oklahoma City Thunder built a 3-0 lead over the Los Angeles Lakers.
Meanwhile, the most compelling tension appears in the other two series, especially a matchup out West between the No.. 2 San Antonio Spurs and No.. 6 Minnesota Timberwolves.. After the teams split their first two matchups to reach a 2-2 tie. the series has turned into a physical chess match built around how effectively Minnesota can slow San Antonio’s centerpiece.
On Friday. Victor Wembanyama delivered a standout performance to power the Spurs. scoring 39 points on 72% shooting while adding 15 rebounds and five blocked shots.. Across the series. the Timberwolves have tried to disrupt him with constant contact—bumping. grabbing. and staying aggressive in an attempt to defend the 7-foot-4 Frenchman as if reducing his space is the best way to reduce his impact.
That approach carried real emotion into Game 4. Wembanyama’s frustration boiled over in the second quarter when, as two Minnesota defenders jostled him, he swung his elbow and struck Naz Reid in the neck area. The move resulted in Wembanyama’s ejection after only 12 minutes of play.
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson later pointed to what he viewed as a failure by officials to protect Wembanyama during moments when physicality intensified.. Johnson said he was glad Wembanyama acted “into his own hands. ” while also clarifying that he did not condone the contact with Reid and emphasized the importance of Reid being okay.. He added that if referees are not calling fouls amid the rough play, players still need to protect themselves.
With Wembanyama out, Minnesota managed to pull out a 114-109 win, leaning on a star effort from Anthony Edwards. Edwards scored 36 points in 40 minutes as the Timberwolves took advantage of a sudden change in matchup dynamics.
Sports calendars may rotate, but the national conversation keeps moving toward 2026. Leading up to the World Cup, attention is centered on a countdown of 26 players to watch, and today’s spotlight falls on Norway’s Erling Haaland.
In club play, Haaland’s setting rarely resembles an underdog story.. At Manchester City in the Premier League. he operates in an environment with deep resources and has been central to the club’s recent dominance. with City winning the Premier League four times in the last five years.. Haaland. a 6-foot-5 striker known for pulling his blond hair into a tight ponytail. has been prolific. scoring more than 100 goals across four seasons.
But when Norway reaches the World Cup stage, Haaland’s role changes. He will try to keep scoring while facing teams that are far more established on the global stage, with Norway aiming to make a statement during their first World Cup appearance since 1998.
Qualifying has not been light on pressure.. Haaland has spoken about feeling the weight of expectations since arriving with the national team in 2019. describing the pressure as difficult to handle earlier. while saying he has grown better at managing it.. That shift matters because Norway’s path includes formidable opponents.
Advancing out of the group stage will require performance against Iraq. Senegal. and France—an especially demanding mix given France’s top ranking and Senegal’s position among the stronger teams.. Haaland is Norway’s most accomplished player. and the tournament will likely demand both goals and the creation of chances for teammates. not just finishing.
While World Cup qualifying statistics do not guarantee anything in the future, Haaland’s output during that period has already been striking. He scored 16 goals in eight games, a record that reinforced how central he is to Norway’s attacking threat.
There is also a personal reason Haaland’s World Cup focus feels different this time.. His father, Alf-Inge Haaland, played for Norway during the 1994 World Cup, which was also hosted in the United States.. Haaland has said it will be “something special” to play the tournament in the U.S.. adding that he expects to feel emotional during national anthem ceremonies.
As the World Cup countdown continues, Friday’s entry highlighted Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, keeping attention on the kind of players who carry the pressure of expectations into major international stages.
Back in the U.S. tonight, the NBA schedule offers its own blend of storyline and urgency. The Detroit Pistons and Cleveland Cavaliers meet again, with Round 2 drama now partly concentrated in a matchup that could decide how each team resets after earlier swings.
Detroit started the series by taking the first two games, but Cleveland responded with a decisive Game 3 win led by Donovan Mitchell. Mitchell scored 35 points, raising the question of whether he can sustain that level again as Game 4 arrives.
Later, the nightcap raises a different kind of speculation: the possibility that it could be the final game of LeBron James’ career. He is 41, and the Lakers face an even tougher situation after falling behind 3-0 against the Oklahoma City Thunder, meaning the margin for error narrows further.
Times are Eastern: 8 p.m. brings No. 1 Detroit Pistons vs. No. 4 Cleveland Cavaliers on NBC/Peacock, followed at 10:30 p.m. by No. 1 Oklahoma City Thunder vs. No. 4 Los Angeles Lakers on Amazon Prime. Misryoum will be back tomorrow with more updates.
