Nationals’ James Wood powers 6-homer rout

James Wood hit his 12th homer as Washington struck for six home runs in a 10-4 win over Cincinnati.

A six-homer night turned Tuesday’s matchup into a runaway, with James Wood providing the spark and the Washington Nationals cruising to a 10-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds.

Wood, driving Washington’s offense throughout the game, launched his 12th home run of the season. Luis Garcia Jr. and Daylen Lile each also went deep twice, combining for a barrage that helped the Nationals record six homers in the same game.

The Nationals’ power surge extended well beyond Wood’s contribution. Brady House added a home run as well, giving Washington multiple players with long balls to account for nearly all of the momentum swings in the contest.

Washington improved to 14-9 on the road with the victory, a step that reinforced the team’s ability to win away from home. The report also noted that their road start ranks among the best in the majors, placing second behind Atlanta.

The Nationals’ lineup produced an unusually balanced home-run pattern.. Lile and Garcia Jr.. became the sixth pair of Nationals players to homer twice in the same game. a franchise feat last accomplished by Brian Dozier and Juan Soto on Aug.. 18, 2019.. That rarity underscored how thoroughly Washington’s batting stayed on track across multiple innings.

Washington also set a mark for its own season-long power output. The team reached 50 home runs in total and, in the process, surpassed its previous single-game home run high of four, which had been established on May 6 in a win over Minnesota.

Cincinnati’s starting pitching faced a difficult early test after a second-inning incident involving Reds starter Brady Singer.. He was struck on the right foot by a line drive off the bat of Lile but stayed in the game after being evaluated by training staff.. The team later said his X-ray came back clean.

Still, Singer struggled to regain full control as the innings moved forward. In the third, he allowed back-to-back homers to Wood and Garcia Jr., putting Washington ahead 2-0. The deficit grew quickly when Lile connected again in the fourth to make it 3-0.

Washington’s long-ball drive continued through the middle innings. In the fifth, Garcia Jr. led off with a homer off Sam Moll. Later in that inning, Lile delivered a three-run shot that pushed the score to 7-2, effectively turning the game into a rout.

By the eighth inning, Washington kept stretching the lead. House hit his sixth home run, a two-run shot off Tony Santillan, adding further separation and limiting any realistic path for the Reds to recover.

On the pitching side, Washington received steady relief to protect the lead after its offense took over. Brad Lord earned the win after working 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Miles Mikolas. Mikolas allowed two runs, with one of them earned, over 3 1/3 innings.

Cincinnati managed to make contact late but could not string together enough productive at-bats.. In the ninth, JJ Bleday hit a two-run double for the Reds.. Even so. Cincinnati went 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position. a statistic that reflected how Washington’s pitching and defense limited key scoring chances.

With the rout in the books, the focus now shifts to Wednesday’s matchup. The Nationals are scheduled to start Jake Irvin, listed at 1-4 with a 5.22 ERA, while Cincinnati will counter with Nick Lodolo, who is 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA.
