More releases, more often will be the Apple way under CEO Ternus

New CEO John Ternus plans for Apple to speed up product development, with the aim to bring out more products throughout the year instead of a few well-worn events.

Barely a month in the seat, Apple CEO John Ternus is preparing to make big changes to the way the company works. Leaning on his engineering background, he wants Apple to be the same way, working to develop new products at a more rapid rate.

As part of this, Bloomberg reports that Ternus is considering a shake-up to the way that Apple launches products. While everyone is used to the usual fall iPhone events and spring launches, Ternus wants to increase the frequency so it goes throughout the year instead.

Spring and fall launches will probably continue to exist, and will be the focus for the meantime. But expect more introductions at other times of year.

Ternus believes Apple needs to become more experimental and to introduce new products more quickly, unidentified employees told the report. All so that Apple can stay competitive in a market that is so AI-centric.

Employees speaking to the report say that changing such an ingrained development practice will be hard. It’s a process that could take years.

Move fast with more things

The change in tempo for releases is only one of the initiatives Ternus wants to embark on, the report continues.

The company is already starting to cut costs, but Ternus also wants to add more sources of revenue.

The primary form of this is to expand the roster of products and services by developing new offerings for consumers. There’s also an interest in generating more revenue from existing product users.

Services has been a long-term source of growth for Apple. But, as that starts to slow down, Apple will need to come up with new ideas to keep it from going flat or edging into decline.

In the short term, Apple has set itself up to sell more to consumers in the coming year. Especially when it comes to products going in new directions.

Aside from the usual suspects, there are the AirPods with cameras, as well as the continually rumored launch of Apple Glass. Another big launch will be the eventual launch of the 20th-anniversary iPhone.
