Michigan lands 4-star edge rusher Xavier Muhammad

Michigan secured four-star edge rusher Xavier Muhammad, beating Notre Dame once again and adding a disruptive trench talent for the 2027 class.

Michigan’s recruiting surge hit another milestone on Thursday, landing a major commitment with the focus keyphrase “Xavier Muhammad” at the center of it all.

The Wolverines confirmed the addition of four-star edge rusher Xavier Muhammad, a prospect listed at 6-foot-5 and 275 pounds from South Houston High in Texas. Muhammad selected Michigan, a decision he confirmed to Hayes Fawcett of On3/Rivals.

The commitment also carried an unmistakable message for Michigan fans. In announcing the choice, Muhammad shared a “let’s go bleed blue” line as he brought his recruitment to a close publicly.

Michigan’s win over Notre Dame once again is notable, since the Wolverines have already been in position to challenge the Irish for top-level recruits. This time, Michigan ultimately prevailed for Muhammad, converting a high-profile matchup into a firm commitment for the 2027 recruiting class.

According to On3/Rivals, Muhammad is ranked as the nation’s No. 8 overall defensive lineman for the 2027 class. He also checks in as the No. 12 talent from the state of Texas, reinforcing how highly valued he is not only nationally but also within his home recruiting pool.

Head coach Kyle Whittingham’s staff put a clear priority on Muhammad’s recruitment. with defensive tackles coach Larry Black Jr.. tasked to lead the effort.. Black is a first-year addition to Michigan’s defensive staff. and his role in landing a prospect of Muhammad’s caliber underscores how rapidly Michigan is extending its recruiting reach.

Black came to Ann Arbor from Vanderbilt to boost the interior of the Wolverines’ defense. and Muhammad’s commitment immediately adds to the kind of impact Michigan was seeking along the defensive front.. For Michigan. it’s a straightforward fit: a disruptive. high-upside defender who can develop into a dominating presence in the trenches.

On the field. Muhammad is described as quick-footed with an explosive first step that can disrupt plays before they fully form at the line of scrimmage.. He’s set up to win with leverage and extension. firing his arms early to gain control and then turning his feet to create the push needed to clog running lanes.

Michigan’s appeal to Muhammad isn’t limited to football alone.. The report highlights that he also brings a basketball background to the program. including an average of 15.1 points per game as a sophomore post presence.. That multi-sport component matters because it can translate into athleticism and body control—traits that often show up in the way defensive linemen move and finish.

Muhammad’s commitment arrives as Michigan continues to build the 2027 class following a period of recruiting momentum. During the week of May 11, he joined fellow wide receiver Burrell among the newest pledges for Michigan.

For Michigan fans. the timing of the decision is especially significant because it arrives during an ongoing recruiting push. with the Wolverines continuing to stack high-ranking talent.. Landing a top-10 national defensive lineman helps set a competitive standard for the defensive line room and signals that the program is actively reinforcing its identity at the point of attack.

From a team-building standpoint, the decision also ties directly into the staff’s emphasis on trench play.. With Black tasked as the lead recruiter and Muhammad’s skill set focused on getting pressure. gaining leverage quickly. and sealing the running game. Michigan’s 2027 outlook on the defensive front is taking shape with a clear football profile in mind.

Meanwhile, the fact that Muhammad’s recruitment included another round of competition against Notre Dame adds weight to the commitment.. Beating the same high-profile program in recruiting cycles can be difficult at this level. and Michigan’s ability to close the door on that pursuit reinforces the Wolverines’ pull with elite prospects in Texas.

  1. Notre Dame keeps losing recruits to Michigan again, it’s kinda wild. Also 6-5 275?? That sounds like a defensive end should be a problem right away.

  2. I thought this was the guy from Houston that already committed somewhere else? Like I swear I saw his name in a different class ranking. But if he’s really No. 8 defensive lineman for 2027 then yeah Whittingham must be cookin. Either way “let’s go bleed blue” is cringe to me.

  3. Wow Larry Black Jr being a first-year coach and Michigan already pulling a 4-star is crazy. I don’t even know all these rankings, but No. 12 from Texas sounds like they’re stealing talent. Also beating Notre Dame “once again” like?? Didn’t Michigan just play them or am I mixing it up with basketball or something. Anyway I guess it’s good for the future.
