Mayo’s 3-run homer powers Orioles past Yankees

Orioles vs – Ryan Weathers carried a no-hitter into the seventh, and Coby Mayo’s three-run homer helped the Orioles beat the Yankees 3-2.
Baltimore snapped its momentum in dramatic fashion on Monday night, turning a late bullpen scare into a 3-2 win over the New York Yankees.
Ryan Weathers took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before the Yankees finally broke through.. Adley Rutschman opened the frame with a bouncer up the middle. and although Weathers made it through the rest of the inning with help from the defense and smart pitching choices. the damage was enough to end the no-hit bid.
After Tyler O’Neill drew a one-out walk, New York turned to reliever Brent Headrick. It was a pivotal moment for the Yankees’ late-game plan, because Weathers had struck out nine and also walked two while throwing 101 pitches through his long stretch on the mound.
Coby Mayo delivered the swing that decided the game. Entering with a .158 batting average, Mayo waited through three pitches from Headrick and then launched the third one into the left-field seats for a three-run homer, turning a tight contest into the kind of margin that can be protected late.
The Orioles’ pitching after the starter’s exit also mattered. Dietrich Enns (1-0) earned the win in relief of starter Brandon Young, and rookie Anthony Nunez closed things out by recording three outs for his second save of the season.
New York’s offense, though limited for much of the night, made its presence felt early. Ben Rice hit a two-run homer in the third inning, giving the Yankees their first meaningful advantage and setting up a game that stayed within reach until the Orioles’ decisive late swing.
Baltimore also had to withstand a late sequence in the ninth that nearly extended the game. Ryan McMahon hit a drive that Tyler O’Neill caught with his back to the right-field wall for the second out, then Paul Goldschmidt singled and pinch-runner José Caballero attempted to steal second.
Caballero had initially been ruled safe, but a replay review overturned the call, ending the game. The final out came with extra stakes because Caballero did not start due to a finger injury, making his late appearance and the steal attempt an even bigger moment in the closing minutes.
For the Yankees, the loss added to an uncomfortable slide. New York has dropped four straight, and this defeat came after they arrived in Baltimore with a clear recent advantage on the season.
Earlier this month, New York completed a four-game sweep of the Orioles at Yankee Stadium, outscoring Baltimore 39-10. That series established how difficult the Yankees had been to slow down at home, and Monday’s result showed Baltimore’s ability to flip the script when key moments fell their way.
Looking ahead, the pitching matchup shifts quickly. Will Warren (4-1, 3.46 ERA) is set to start for New York on Tuesday night.
The Orioles will counter with left-hander Trevor Rogers, who is scheduled to begin after an extended absence.. Rogers has been on the 15-day injured list since April 26 due to an illness. and Baltimore will be watching to see whether he can help steady the rotation as they continue their push against another tough Yankees lineup.
For Weathers, the outing was defined by endurance and near-mastery, even though the no-hitter ended in the seventh.. Striking out nine while walking two. and reaching 101 pitches. he kept the game close enough for a late Orioles breakthrough. and that is exactly what ultimately made the difference in a 3-2 finish.
