A Massachusetts man died while hiking in New Hampshire on Saturday, officials announced.

Around 11:22 a.m., emergency officials responded to a report of a hiker found unconscious along Old Bridle Path on West Rattlesnake Mountain in Holderness, New Hampshire, according to the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department.

First responders found other hikers administering CPR on Richard Chateauneuf, 64, of Tynsgboro, approximately 3/4 of a mile from the trailhead, officials said.

“Despite valiant efforts by the good citizens and first responders, Chateauneuf was unable to be revived,” the department wrote.

New Hampshire Fish and Game paid for the rescue effort with funds from the NH Hike Safe Card and the Search and Rescue Fund, the department said.
