Mariners promote Colt Emerson, Donovan sidelined with injury

Mariners call – Seattle has called up top prospect Colt Emerson, while placing infielder Brendan Donovan on the 10-day injured list as the Mariners prepare for a Sunday night home game against the San Diego Padres.

Colt Emerson is finally getting his first major league taste as the Mariners bring the No. 6-ranked prospect to Seattle, making the call after a season that has kept him climbing through the minors.

In a corresponding move, infielder Brendan Donovan was placed on the 10-day injured list. Emerson, a 20-year-old shortstop, enters the majors after producing for the triple-A Tacoma Rainiers, where he is slashing .255/.347/.469 with seven home runs and 26 RBIs over 38 games.

Seattle’s decision comes with momentum behind Emerson’s story. He was selected 22nd overall in the first round of the 2023 MLB Draft out of high school and has continued to rise through prospect rankings even as injuries at various points have limited his path.

The Mariners also have significant financial commitment tied to Emerson’s development.. Seattle signed Emerson to an eight-year. $95-million contract on April 1—an amount that stands as the largest deal for a prospect yet to make his major league debut.. That contract begins in 2026 and includes a team option for 2034.

The deal carries extra weight in how it compares to other top prospects. The contract exceeded Jackson Chourio’s eight-year, $82-million agreement with the Milwaukee Brewers from 2023, which came when Chourio was still a minor leaguer.

On the field, the timing matters. The Mariners are currently third in the AL West at 22-25, a far different position from one season ago, when Seattle won the division. With that backdrop, the next test arrives quickly: Seattle hosts the San Diego Padres on Sunday night.

The sequence of moves is straightforward but telling in its timing: Emerson’s promotion follows a season with Tacoma production and a history of injuries, while Donovan’s placement on the 10-day injured list creates an immediate roster opening as Seattle sits at 22-25 in the AL West.
