Lee Jung-hoo explains controversial foul-area catch as Giants fall to Dodgers

Giants right fielder Lee Jung-hoo addressed criticism after catching a shallow fly ball in the right foul area, saying the call was shaped by the early-game situation and a drain near Dodger Stadium’s fence.

San Francisco Giants right fielder Lee Jung-hoo pushed back on criticism over a “minor controversy” from the day before, when his defense in the right foul area became a talking point during a game that ended in a 0-4 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

In the bottom of the fourth inning. with runners on first and third and none out. Dodgers batter Alex Cole hit a shallow fly ball that drifted into the right foul area.. Lee Jung-hoo sprinted and made the catch.. But Teoscar Hernandez. who had been on third. tagged and scored the inning’s first run. putting questions around whether the out was truly worth it.

Some fans and members of the press wondered aloud if he should have let the ball fall rather than coming in, especially since it appeared to contribute to a run being allowed. Reporters also asked directly whether Lee Jung-hoo should have caught the ball.

Willy Adames later committed a baserunning error in the top of the seventh inning, a mistake that briefly shifted the mood after an otherwise frustrating game for San Francisco. Still, the decision in the fourth remained a point of debate.

Speaking ahead of the Giants’ away game against the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium on the 15th, Lee Jung-hoo recalled the moment and defended the choice as a judgment made in real time. He told MK Sports, “I was a warrior, and I was still at the end of the fourth inning.”

He said he believed it was important to increase the number of outs early because the inning was still at a stage where an out could change the rhythm of the at-bat.. “If it was an extended situation. I wouldn’t have caught it. ” he added. framing the play as a decision based on the game context rather than a simple calculation of risk.

Lee Jung-hoo also said he could not fully execute a throw from where the ball landed. He explained that the Dodger Stadium foul territory near the fence includes a drain ahead of the barrier, and that the presence of a spike gong in that drainage area interfered with a proper throw.

While he acknowledged that the ball was not hit particularly deep and that it could have played differently in another part of the stadium, he stopped short of offering an apology, emphasizing the constraints he faced at the time.

For the matchup on the 15th. San Francisco announced its lineup with Lee Jung-hoo in right field. Luis Arraez at second base. Casey Schmidt as designated hitter. Rafael Devers at first base. and Eliot Ramos in left field.. Willie Adames was listed at third base. with Matt Chapman also slated at third. Drew Gilbert in center field. and Eric Haas behind the plate.

Landon Loop was set to start for the Giants against Los Angeles right-hander Emmett Sheehan.
