Latvian Military Activates NATO Jets Following Airspace Alert

Latvian military authorities issued an urgent airspace warning on Monday, advising residents in two eastern regions of the Baltic nation to shelter indoors as NATO air policing fighter jets were scrambled to address an unfolding security situation.

“TAKE ACTION! We inform you that there is a threat in the airspace of Latvia,” the armed forces announced in a public statement posted to social media.

The alert underscores growing regional anxiety as stray Ukrainian military drones occasionally drift into the airspace of neighboring NATO members, including Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. These border incidents have sparked persistent concerns that the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine could spill over into alliance territory, particularly as Ukrainian forces target Russian Baltic Sea oil shipping ports.

Stray drones missing their intended targets have repeatedly triggered security protocols across the region. In Latvia, similar airspace incidents earlier this year contributed directly to a domestic political crisis that resulted in a government collapse.

The broader geopolitical fallout has intensified diplomatic friction. Moscow has repeatedly accused Kyiv of deliberately utilizing NATO airspace as operational cover for military strikes, whereas Ukrainian officials attribute the stray flights to intensive Russian electronic warfare and signal jamming that steers drones off course.

Meanwhile, NATO member governments place the ultimate responsibility for the recurring airspace violations squarely on Moscow, noting that the security disruptions are a direct consequence of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine nearly five years ago.
