King Charles ‘sounded giddily elated — like a lottery winner’ when Princess Diana died, her brother Charles Spencer says 

Charles Spencer made a shocking allegation about King Charles III‘s reaction to Princess Diana‘s death.

In the 9th Earl Spencer’s new book Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, the historian alleged that His Majesty didn’t sound bereft over the loss of the mother of his children.

Charles allegedly ‘sounded giddily elated’ after Diana died

In an excerpt published by Daily Mail, Diana’s sibling recounted speaking with his former brother-in-law after finding out the then-Princess of Wales had died at 36 following a car crash in Paris.

“The phone rang constantly. Prince Charles caught me as I crossed the landing upstairs,” Spencer wrote.

“Unlike my other callers, who were stunned, barely able to articulate their condolences and offers of help, he sounded giddily elated — like a lottery winner, I remember thinking at the time,” the 62-year-old penned.

Spencer claimed the king sounded ‘strangely matter-of-fact’ over Diana’s passing

Spencer said he didn’t sense any sorrow in Charles’ reaction to the tragedy.

“He let me know he had informed Prince William and Prince Harry of their mother’s death, first thing that morning, in their bedrooms at Balmoral,” Spencer wrote.

“It all sounded strangely matter-of-fact, given the enormity of the disaster,” he added.

Diana’s death would ‘free’ Charles to marry Camilla

Although Charles and Diana had been divorced for a year when she died, Spencer believes her passing made it easier for Charles to find a path to wed Queen Camilla.

“Looking back now, I suspect the prince’s first reaction must have been to think more of how this event might free him to marry the woman he loved, rather than appreciating the loss of one he did not,” Diana’s brother pointed out.

“It can be hard to feel too much sympathy for an ex-spouse, or those who care for them profoundly, after bitter divorce,” Spencer added.

Spencer claims some in palace were ‘relieved’ Diana died

Spencer also alleged that there were people within The Firm who were far from heartbroken to learn about Diana’s death.

“There were others in the palace, I already knew, who were relieved — ­indeed, pleased — that she had gone,” he alleged.

Spencer’s book will be released on September 22.
