Jim Thompson hands Crown CEO reins to Jennifer

Jim Thompson. the billionaire founder behind Crown Worldwide’s rise into a global logistics business. said he has spent years learning how to be both a builder and a father.. With his daughter. Jennifer Harvey. now running the company as CEO—a role she was appointed to in 2023—Thompson’s reflections circle around one tension that often follows family control: how to keep leadership credible while keeping family ties real.

In Crown’s early days. Thompson said he spent much of his time traveling or working alongside his management team and customers.. Even so. he aimed to be home most weekends. spending time with his young daughter through boating. water sports. and other activities.. He described feeling “always able to be a big part of Jenny’s life as she was growing. ” and said he was there to “help her develop her values.”

Thompson also said he did not expect Crown to grow to the level it has reached.. Around 30 years ago. he began thinking seriously about whether his children might take over the family business. even as he insisted he wanted them to have fulfilling careers.. “It would have been a bit of a disappointment if Jennifer chose not to join the family business. ” Thompson said. while adding that he would be “more unhappy if she chose to join the company just to please me and not because she felt she wanted the challenge.”

On the question of legitimacy. Thompson acknowledged the spotlight that would come with Harvey becoming CEO of the company he founded.. He said it would raise questions of nepotism and doubts over whether she was qualified for the role. and he noted Harvey was “well aware” that taking charge of Crown “would be a challenge” for those reasons.. “But she dealt with this in a very mature way. ” he said. and Thompson added that other executives eventually came to view her as “the right person for the job.”

Thompson framed his own relationship to the job as both fatherhood and mentorship, but deliberately separated from day-to-day control.. He described Harvey as “much more of a people person” than he is. with a “talent” for reading people. and praised her as an “excellent communicator” who has a “natural ability to motivate and get the most out of her managers.” He said he keeps mentoring “very much in the background” and offered advice only if she wants it. insisting: “I do not look over her shoulder or comment on all her decisions.”

He said he does not struggle to separate father and advisor.. “She’s strong. very independent. and a good leader. but also a loving daughter. ” Thompson said. adding that he has tried to pass on two lessons.. First. he said “integrity is invaluable. ” and that “it’s paramount” for a CEO to ensure the company earns the respect of employees. customers. and competitors.. Second. he said it matters to have “a company with a heart. ” and to encourage employees to be charitable to those less fortunate.

Because Crown is private, Thompson said it can support those goals in a “very effective and personal manner,” and that giving back has become “embedded in our culture.” When asked whether more of his descendants might eventually run Crown, he said it would be up to them.

The pattern in Thompson’s account ties family life to corporate decision-making: he describes prioritizing weekends and his daughter’s development early on. then later placing “Jennifer’s happiness” above the need for her to be his successor. even as he recognizes the nepotism doubts that her CEO appointment would bring and emphasizes how executives came to accept her leadership.
