Meta has launched Instants, a brand new iPhone app centered on ephemeral photo sharing.. The company is also introducing Instants as a new Instagram feature. tying the experience directly into the inbox area where messages and photo sharing already happen.. The goal. according to Meta. is to make it easier for users to post organically in the moment with “spontaneous. unfiltered” photos.
Instants are designed to be temporary for the person viewing them.. Meta says Instants disappear after friends view them, reinforcing a less curated, more everyday style of sharing.. At the same time. users aren’t left completely without history: Instants are saved in the creator’s archive for up to a year.. Those archived Instants can then be reshared later as a recap to Stories. creating a bridge between disappearing posts and longer-term sharing.
Meta is building interaction into the system as well. Friends can react and reply to Instants, and those replies go directly into DMs. That means the ephemeral photo isn’t just a one-way moment; it can trigger follow-up conversation immediately in the messaging flow.
The feature also comes with tools and guardrails intended for younger users and families.. Full Teen Accounts and Family Center protections apply, including shared time limits, Sleep Mode, and parental supervision.. For Meta. that matters because the product is explicitly positioned around everyday. in-the-moment sharing. which typically requires clearer boundaries when used by teens.
On Instagram, Meta describes Instants as living in the bottom-right corner of the inbox.. The company’s guidance outlines a straightforward path: open Instagram’s inbox. tap the mini stack of photos in that bottom-right area. and create a new Instants post using the camera.. Meta says you can add a caption first, unlike Stories where captioning typically comes as part of a different flow.
However, the editing options are intentionally limited.. Meta says once you create an Instants, you can’t further edit it after the caption stage.. Users also choose who receives the shared Instants. with two primary sharing groups available: Close Friends or followers you follow back (described as mutuals).
Sharing itself is designed to be repeatable.. Meta says there’s a white button below the camera that allows you to share as many Instants as you want.. Importantly for users who might change their mind quickly. an undo option appears automatically right after sharing so the post can be pulled back before it’s delivered to friends.
On the recipient side, Instants appear as a stack of photos in the bottom-right corner of friends’ inboxes. Those Instants then disappear after being viewed, preserving the ephemeral nature that Meta is emphasizing across both the app and the Instagram feature.
Although Meta calls Instants primarily an Instagram feature. it is experimenting with a standalone app because early testers wanted a faster route to create and share.. In that separate iPhone app, users log in with their existing Instagram account.. Instants shared in the standalone app are designed to be visible to friends on Instagram. and Instants shared on Instagram should also carry over to the standalone app—keeping the experience connected rather than fragmented.
Meta says it is “experimenting” with the standalone version to learn how its community uses it. with plans to evolve the product as it gathers feedback.. In addition. Meta is rolling out an Instants app in select countries on iOS and Android. broadening the immediate convenience for users who want quicker camera access.
Availability is also straightforward. Meta says the Instants for iPhone app is available in the App Store starting today where offered. The new Instagram feature is arriving now as a global release.
Why does Meta keep pushing in this direction?. In this context.
