Hurst readies toast as Moore’s legacy returns

Geoff Hurst will honour his late West Ham and England teammate Bobby Moore as part of The Big Toast on Celebration Day, calling Moore the biggest influence on his football life as England prepare for a World Cup with the Moore legacy still a central motivator.

Geoff Hurst is preparing a simple gesture that carries a long shadow of memories: a toast to Bobby Moore.

The 1966 hat-trick hero will take part in The Big Toast—an event marking Celebration Day on the last Monday in May—where people are invited to raise a glass. cup. or mug at 7pm to honour loved ones or mentors who helped shape their lives.. Hurst’s tribute lands on the anniversary of grief for Moore. who died in 1993. and on the kind of respect Hurst says has never matched Moore’s standing.

Hurst named West Ham and England captain Bobby Moore as the biggest influence of his career. and said he will celebrate Moore’s impact on his life as part of the wider remembrance.. “Being able to remember people that had an influence on your life and. in my case. no longer here. it’s such an important and a really lovely thing. ” Hurst said.. He described Moore’s influence as reaching into the way Moore played and conducted himself. both on the field and off it.

Moore’s full name was given by Hurst as Robert Frederick Chelsea Moore. “or. as most know him. Bobby Moore.” Hurst said he knew him “as Mooro. ” adding that Moore’s behaviour and leadership became a constant reference point as his own career developed.. “He had a huge influence on my football career. how he played. how he acted. how he behaved. both on and off the field. ” Hurst said.

Hurst also revisited the closeness between the two players. noting Moore was only eight months older yet advanced through the West Ham Academy and England setup earlier.. Moore and Hurst were teammates for more than 15 years at West Ham. after starting their careers there in 1958. and Hurst described Moore as a senior guide “both on and off the field and how he led his life.”

“He was called immaculate by fans. by friends. by team-mates. by opponents. and so it’s a lovely opportunity to raise a toast to Mooro.” Hurst said he has long believed Moore “has never been shown the reverence and respect he deserved. ” and he backed a campaign last year pushing for Moore to receive a posthumous knighthood.

The toast arrives as England’s coach Thomas Tuchel heads to the United States this summer for the World Cup. with the report placing the focus on ending “60 years of hurt since Moore lifted the trophy.” Hurst’s remembrance ties directly into that backdrop. with the event’s aim described as pausing the nation at 7pm to mark those “who are no longer with us. ” under the hashtag #MarkTheirMemory.

Hurst’s tribute sits among other names expected to be involved in The Big Toast. with Olympic and Paralympic heroes Sir Mo Farah and Ellie Simmonds also listed as part of the wider roll call.. The shared theme is personal influence—those who shaped lives rather than those who simply passed through them—and Hurst’s message sums up the appeal of turning remembrance into something people can do together on one evening.
