Holmes fractured fibula, Mets brace for rotation shock

Holmes fractured – Clay Holmes suffered a fractured right fibula in the Mets’ 5-2 Subway Series opener loss to the Yankees and is expected to miss “a long time,” with New York already juggling multiple injuries.

The Mets’ Subway Series opener at Citi Field turned into a blow for New York’s pitching staff when right-hander Clay Holmes left Friday night’s 5-2 loss to the Yankees after suffering a fractured right fibula.

Holmes was injured in the fourth inning when Yankees rookie Spencer Jones drilled a 111.1 mph line drive that struck his lower right leg.. The hit resulted in an infield single. but Holmes stayed in the game—checked by the training staff and manager Carlos Mendoza—continuing through the fourth and facing seven hitters in the fifth before exiting after a walk to Jazz Chisholm Jr.. X-rays later confirmed the fracture, the smaller bone alongside the tibia in the lower leg.

After the game, Mendoza said Holmes would be “out for a long time,” without offering a specific timetable.. While typical bone fractures take around six weeks to heal—potentially carrying him into late June—the location is in Holmes’ push-off leg. which could complicate his recovery depending on where exactly the break occurred.

The early returns on Holmes’ outing weren’t encouraging.. He allowed four earned runs in 4 1/3 innings on seven hits.. Still. New York had leaned on him heavily this season. with Holmes entering Friday’s start sporting a 2.39 ERA across nine starts and 52 2/3 innings—the best among Mets starters and one of the top marks among qualified pitchers.. He also posted a 3.22 FIP, with 37 strikeouts and only 33 hits and 16 walks allowed.

The injury lands on top of an already thin rotation. The Mets are also without Kodai Senga (lumbar spine inflammation), Justin Hagenman (rib fracture), and Tylor Megill, who is out after undergoing Tommy John surgery in September 2025.

With Holmes sidelined, the Mets face a pitching workload they can’t afford to mismanage. New York is 18-26, and the rotation move is unavoidable even though Holmes’ production makes him difficult to replace.

The leading internal option is No. 5 prospect Jack Wenninger, a 24-year-old right-hander who has posted a 1.08 ERA over seven Triple-A starts for Syracuse. But he’s also issued 18 walks in 33 1/3 innings, an ongoing command concern that makes his path to the rotation far from straightforward.

Other possibilities include Tobias Myers, still stretched out after an early-season bullpen role, and No. 2 prospect Jonah Tong, who has a 5.68 ERA over nine Syracuse starts.

For now, the only certainty is the timeframe is unclear, and the Mets will have to reshape their rotation with Holmes out “a long time” after the fractured fibula forced an early end to what had been a standout season for their right-handed starter.
