Highlands College appoints new principal Lance Chatfield

Highlands College has named Lance Chatfield as its incoming Principal, set to begin his leadership role in September 2026.
Highlands College has officially announced that Lance Chatfield will take the helm as its new Principal starting in September 2026. Bringing a diverse professional background, Chatfield is set to lead the institution into its next phase of development.
Before dedicating more than two decades to the education sector, Chatfield originally trained as an electrical engineer. This unique shift in career paths eventually led him to complete an Executive MBA, bridging the gap between technical expertise and strategic business leadership.
His transition highlights a growing trend of industry professionals moving into educational administration to better align academic curricula with the demands of the modern workforce.
Throughout his twenty-one-year career in education, Chatfield has earned national recognition for his efforts in skills development. His work in maritime education was particularly lauded, earning him the prestigious Queen’s Anniversary Prize at Buckingham Palace.
Beyond his administrative roles, he has been deeply involved in curriculum design and hands-on teaching. He has instructed students in BSc Civil Engineering and pioneered specialist academic tracks, including the development of the United Kingdom’s only foundation degree in Marine Autonomy.
Misryoum notes that the incoming principal’s experience in both business and industry is expected to play a critical role in how the college evolves its professional and technical pathways.
As he prepares for the transition, Chatfield expressed his enthusiasm for the mission ahead. He emphasized that the college serves as a vital pillar for the island’s economy and is committed to fostering an inclusive environment for students from all walks of life.
He is slated to succeed Jo Terry-Marchant, who will conclude her tenure on 10 July. Terry-Marchant leaves behind a legacy spanning thirty-five years in education, including over two decades of dedicated service to Highlands College.
Reflecting on the appointment, Terry-Marchant praised her successor’s energy and vision. She expressed confidence that his background makes him the ideal candidate to guide the institution forward.
This leadership change represents a significant milestone for the institution as it balances historical strengths with future-focused educational goals.
