Heat’s Giannis Antetokounmpo-Bam Adebayo duo in action is ‘surreal’ to Erik Spoelstra

MIAMI – With the Miami Heat starting a new era with Giannis Antetokounmpo at the forefront, Tuesday was the first day of training camp at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) in Boca Raton, Florida, as the star continues to build chemistry with the team. As the Heat newcomer comes off a long stint with the Milwaukee Bucks, where he spent the last 13 seasons, head coach Erik Spoelstra would give insight into watching Antetokounmpo in a Miami jersey practice for the first time.

While it has been a familiar sight to watch Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo battle on the court on opposing sides, it’s now on the same squad, with the intent to make each better as teammates, as they faced each other in one-on-one drills on Tuesday. For Spoelstra, it’s “surreal” watching the two go at one another on the court.

“It’s surreal, still, seeing them battle against each other, battle with each other,” Spoelstra said Tuesday. “And I’m sure it is also surreal for them, being in a different uniform, being in a different environment, a different culture. We want to be open to them and their experiences, and we want them to be open to us as well, and the possibilities of how we do things. Eventually we’ll blend cultures and create our own with this group.”

As the dynamic duo of Antetokounmpo and Adebayo will be exciting for fans to witness, them practicing against one another is a way to “sharpen” one’s skills, as the captain echoed the same sentiments.

“Man, it’s been a while since we had bigs that can bump like that,” Adebayo said of his new star teammate. “It’s a good way to sharpen your skills. If we guard each other in practice, we’re going to make each other better for the game.”

The Heat start a new era as team completes first day of training camp

Besides Antetokounmpo, Tuesday’s start to training camp at FAU leads to the preseason opener on Saturday against the Toronto Raptors, as the team looks to get everybody on the same page. With new faces like Antetokounmpo, Klay Thompson, Tim Hardaway Jr., Bobby Portis Jr., rookie Ryan Conwell, and Nick Richards, Tuesday was the first opportunity officially for everybody to get aligned.

“Everybody came into camp ready, prepared, in shape,” Spoelstra said. “So we were able to get right to it today. That’s what they wanted. They wanted some hunger games. They wanted to get after it. We were able to do that right away.”

“We know what the deal is,” Spoelstra continued. “That’s the good thing about this training camp. There’s great clarity on why we’re here, and we don’t have to overtalk that. It’s understood. We mentioned it last night in our meeting, and now it’s just about getting to work and putting it in our system.”

There’s no denying that excitement is brewing not just with the fanbase, but with the team itself, as players feel the buzz around them, helped by the acquisition of the two-time Most Valuable Player (MVP) in Antetokounmpo. Trading Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel’el Ware, Kasparas Jakucionis, and significant draft capital for one of the top players in the league, it has led to the team being back in championship talks.

“It was a great Day 1,” Adebayo said. “Get it all out, finally get it in training camp, get it going. That’s what it’s about: competition.”

At any rate, Antetokounmpo and Adebayo will continue getting ready with Miami as training camp continues at FAU on Wednesday.
