Gunman Shot on Memorial Drive in Cambridge

A 46-year-old gunman opened fire on Memorial Drive in Cambridge, MA, and was shot by a state trooper and a civilian. Two men were critically injured.
Gunfire on a major Cambridge roadway ended within minutes, but its impact rippled across the Charles River neighborhood as witnesses described a man walking down the middle of Memorial Drive and firing at vehicles in an erratic pattern.
Authorities said the attack unfolded Monday afternoon on Memorial Drive in Cambridge. Massachusetts. between River Street and Pleasant Street Extension. with reports of an assault-style rifle.. The incident began shortly after 1 p.m.. after Cambridge Police received a 911 call from Boston Police indicating the suspect was in the area and armed with a rifle.
The Massachusetts U.S.. Attorney’s office confirmed the gunman. identified as 46-year-old Tyler Brown. was taken into custody and was receiving treatment for gunshot wounds at a Boston hospital.. Officials said Brown was shot by both a responding State Police trooper and a civilian. a former Marine who holds a license to carry a firearm.
Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said officers arrived to what was already an active shooter situation. describing Brown as walking down the center of Memorial Drive while shooting in what she characterized as an erratic fashion at multiple vehicles along the road.. Ryan said investigators believe 50 to 60 rounds were fired, and at least a dozen vehicles were struck by gunfire.
Two men. each in separate vehicles. were shot and were being treated for life-threatening injuries at Boston-area hospitals. according to Ryan.. She added that a number of people were near the road in the moments after the first shots. including those on or near the river. walking. pushing baby carriages. and traveling through the area.
Ryan said as people scattered from their cars, a State Police trooper and the civilian confronted Brown with their weapons.. She said both fired and that Brown was struck multiple times in his extremities.. Troopers also provided first aid to Brown as well as to the two victims who had been shot before the injured were transported for medical care.
The investigation also found evidence that the gunfire extended beyond cars.. Ryan said a U.S.. Postal Service truck was struck when a bullet passed through the front windshield and hit just inches from the driver’s headrest; the driver was not injured. according to a report relayed from a coworker.. Ryan also said the trooper’s cruiser was struck by gunfire during the confrontation.
Investigators do not believe there is a connection between Brown and the people inside the vehicles that were hit. Ryan said.. She said Brown is facing multiple charges. including two counts of armed assault with intent to murder. though it was unclear when he would be arraigned.. Brown was being treated in the intensive care unit at the time the report was made.
The lead-up to the shooting was also coming under scrutiny.. According to I-Team sources. a photo of Brown had been included in an officer safety bulletin that went out Monday morning.. Earlier. around 12:30 p.m.. police had attempted what authorities described as a well-being check at Brown’s home in Dorchester after his parole officer reported that he made suicidal statements.
As investigators pieced together the timeline. witnesses described a chaotic scene in which the suspect appeared to aim at cars as they moved.. Several witnesses told a local station that they were driving on Memorial Drive when the shooting began.. One driver said he stopped, crouched inside his vehicle, and believed Brown hit his radiator.. Another account described Brown approaching and lifting the rifle toward a nearby car before the witness ducked behind the dashboard.
Other witnesses said they saw State Police respond quickly.. They described a trooper arriving and. within seconds. engaging Brown. with the shooting ending after the suspect was struck multiple times.. One witness said that after the first confrontation began, the trooper positioned himself quickly near the vehicle before exchanging gunfire.
In a separate account. a woman driving a small school van said she was traveling to pick up children with special needs when the gunshots started.. She said she and another woman in the van crouched, then later jumped out and fled through nearby bushes.. She described running for her life as she escaped, adding that she believed she heard at least 15 or more shots.
Residents also reported hearing a barrage of shots from a distance.. A woman living in a nearby building said she was on a 10th-floor balcony when she heard gunfire fired in rapid succession.. Another man said he was on the 18th floor and estimated he heard roughly 30 shots. describing the suspect as screaming in the road.
Traffic disruptions followed the incident as police closed off part of Memorial Drive and nearby streets. Cambridge drivers were asked to avoid the area, and a large section of the roadway remained marked with police tape for a time. The road later reopened late Monday night.
Governor Maura Healey said she was monitoring the situation while Massachusetts State Police investigated alongside local law enforcement. Healey emphasized that there was no ongoing threat to the public, while urging residents and commuters to avoid the area so public safety personnel could work.
Memorial Drive runs alongside the Charles River in Cambridge. minutes from Boston. an area known for both commuting traffic and pedestrians moving near the waterfront.. In the hours after the shooting. investigators indicated they would be interviewing hundreds of witnesses over the next several days. and they asked anyone with video of the incident to contact Massachusetts State Police.
Brown’s prior record also figured into the broader picture.. In 2021. he was sentenced to 5 to 6 years in state prison followed by probation for firing at a Boston Police officer in the South End.. That earlier case. combined with Monday’s reported parole-related concern and an officer safety bulletin sent earlier that morning. has raised questions about how law enforcement managed warnings and responded to evolving risk.
While officials said the immediate threat was contained quickly. the incident underscores the dangers posed when a single armed person targets moving traffic in a dense. highly traveled corridor.. The presence of residents. commuters. and vehicles near a river-adjacent roadway can turn a brief burst of gunfire into a wide-reaching emergency. and Ryan’s remarks about the potential for harm beyond the initially struck cars reflected that concern.
For many in the area. the most lasting question may be how quickly warnings and bulletins can translate into public safety on the ground.. With investigations now focused on witness accounts and video. authorities are expected to refine the timeline from the first 911 call to the final moments of the trooper and civilian engagement. including how the suspect moved. selected targets. and was ultimately stopped.
