Gulf State Park opens new RV resort

Gulf State Park in Alabama unveiled a new RV resort with 103 campsites, modern hookups, and expanded amenities—built to meet year-round demand.

Gulf State Park is betting big on visitors who travel by RV, opening a new resort designed to expand capacity and modernize the guest experience on Alabama’s Gulf Coast.

In a Monday announcement. park officials said the newly opened RV resort will add 103 premium campsites. bringing the total to 607 RV sites.. The park described the upgrade as a redefinition of RV travel. emphasizing “elevated comfort. ” modern amenities. and easier access to the region’s beaches and trails.

Demand has been a central driver.. Chris Blankenship. commissioner of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. said the park’s campground typically operates at least 90% capacity year-round.. With construction now complete. he said the expansion is meant to meet that consistent demand and deliver a more “wow”-worthy experience for guests.

The grand opening was marked with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by community leaders and State Parks staff. Officials framed the new resort as both a practical capacity boost and an enhancement of the recreational options available on-site, from hiking routes to beach access.

The RV resort is built around a broad set of upgrades.. It includes 103 new RV campsites with modern water, sewer, and electrical hookups.. A new administration and check-in building is slated to streamline arrival and guest services. while a new clubhouse adds meeting spaces. catering facilities. and a snack bar.

Comfort and accessibility are also prominent in the additions. The resort adds two new bathhouses, featuring private, family-style suites intended to provide added comfort and security. For leisure time, guests will find a saltwater pool and a separate splash pad.

Active recreation options have been expanded as well, with a putting green and pickleball courts, alongside a new accessible playground.. For organized gatherings, four newly constructed pavilions are designed to support events.. Other features include a 24-hour laundry facility and smooth. paved roads. including a four-lane camper entrance intended to handle today’s largest RVs.. The park also added mulched hiking trails.

State Parks leadership tied the investment to the park’s wider appeal. noting that Gulf State Park offers more than just RV lodging.. Alabama State Parks Director Matthew Capps pointed to the park’s pier, beaches, Lake Shelby, and the Hugh S.. Banyon Backcountry Trail as part of what draws visitors back repeatedly.

The new resort also fits into a wider cycle of Alabama state parks spending approved by voters in 2022. Officials said the campground was built using Alabama’s $85 million state parks investment, a funding package that has also supported major work at other parks.

That broader investment helped drive the total renovation of Lake Lurleen State Park near Tuscaloosa, which reopened last month.. In addition. another bond project is under way at Cheaha State Park: construction of a new 32-room bluff-side lodge. with officials saying it is on track to finish later this year.

Recent completed improvements at other state parks include the new playground at Joe Wheeler State Park and a new Event Center at Chewacla State Park. Together, the projects illustrate a sustained effort to update facilities for both families and visitors who stay for longer periods.

Local political support for the Gulf Coast expansion was also part of the public rollout.. Rep.. Frances Holk-Jones called Gulf State Park a “crown jewel. ” saying the addition reflects an ongoing commitment to preserving and enhancing a major public resource.. She argued that projects like the new resort improve access for families and support tourism and economic opportunity across Alabama. particularly in the coastal community.

With the new RV resort now open, Gulf State Park is effectively adding both beds and infrastructure—aiming to convert heavy year-round demand into a more spacious, amenity-rich stay while keeping the park’s larger recreational draw front and center for returning visitors.

  1. wait so they tore down the old campground to build this?? my family has been going there for like 20 years and if they messed with the beachside spots i swear im done. nobody asked for a saltwater pool when the gulf is right there lol thats kinda ridiculous to me

  2. I read somewhere that these state park expansions are usually funded by those federal infrastructure bills which honestly explains why everything costs so much now to get in. like they build all this fancy stuff and then charge you double what you used to pay. happened at the one near us in Florida too, they redid everything and now its basically a resort price not a state park price. my buddy tried booking last month and said it was like 80 bucks a night which is insane for camping. not saying its bad just saying who is this even for at that point, regular families or people with those 100k RVs. probably the second one if im being honest.
