Greenfield track & field roundup shows Pioneer Valley sweep

Greenfield’s boys teams dominated Pioneer Valley and Athol in a tri-meet while the girls added multiple wins across hurdles, jumps and sprints.

A cool, cloudy tri-meet turned into a statement for Greenfield’s track and field teams.

On Thursday, the Greenfield squads hosted Pioneer Valley Regional and Athol, kicking things off with the boys meet. Greenfield rolled past Pioneer Valley (129-15) and Athol (119-26), setting the tone early in conditions that never really warmed up.

The spotlight ran through Greenfield’s distance group, with Ryan Spofford taking first in the 2-mile (10:26.8) and also placing in the 800. He then anchored the final leg of the 4×400 at a pace that helped keep the lead secure.

In this context, performances like that matter because they show depth across multiple race types, not just one standout event.

Mason Youmell was another key difference-maker, winning several events for the Green Wave. He cleared the pole vault at 12 feet, topped the triple jump at 40-3.5, and captured both hurdles races, including the 110 hurdles and the 400 hurdles in 59 seconds.

An event that grabbed attention came in the high jump, where Jack Laurie and Pioneer’s Carter Berthiaume both reached six feet.. Despite that shared height, the two stayed closely matched through attempts, and Berthiaume edged Laurie for the narrow win.. Laurie later had to shift quickly, heading to the javelin area to avoid disqualification before returning to the high jump after a 156-foot, six-inch throw.

Meanwhile, Athol’s field events were led by Nicholas LeBlanc, who dominated the discus and shot put. His discus mark of 130 feet, 11 inches came with a sizable cushion, and he framed the event as a constant effort to throw farther.

On the girls side, Greenfield also came away with wins over both Athol and Pioneer.. Kyra Tamsin was a multiple-event winner, taking first in the 400 hurdles and the 110 hurdles, and she pointed to steady improvement in practice and more work on hurdling.. Greenfield added wins from Nina St.. Clair in the triple jump and long jump, while Harper Hake earned the win over Greenfield in the 800.

Pioneer’s Addison Chapin helped drive a Pioneer victory over Athol by winning the long jump and the 200-meter, and Athol countered with wins in the throws and the 100-meter.

Late Wednesday results also rounded out the day’s slate, including Frontier holding off Turners Falls in a Suburban East matchup. In the bigger picture, nights like these are a reminder that track is about both individual moments and how those moments stack up for a team score.
