Graham Warns GOP: Defy Trump, and You’ll Lose

Graham warns – Sen. Lindsey Graham linked Sen. Bill Cassidy’s primary defeat in Louisiana to a broader warning for Republicans who might challenge President Donald Trump—promising there will be “no room” for anyone reaching across the aisle to oppose his agenda.

When Louisiana voters knocked Sen. Bill Cassidy out of his own party’s nomination fight, Sen. Lindsey Graham treated it as a message Republicans would feel all the way up the ballot.

Speaking on “Meet the Press” on Sunday. Graham said Cassidy’s loss was “proper comeuppance” for voting to impeach President Donald Trump. arguing it would have “ruined his political life” and left him unable to keep running for office.. Graham said Cassidy “could have never run for office again. ” and he framed the outcome as proof of what happens to anyone who “stand[s] in the way” of the MAGA agenda.

Cassidy, one of the small group of Republican senators who voted to impeach Trump after the Jan.. 6, 2021, insurrection, finished third after polls closed on Saturday.. The Republican primary left Trump’s preferred candidate, Rep.. Julia Letlow (R-La.), and State Treasurer John Fleming headed to November’s runoff.. Cassidy’s defeat also makes him the first Republican Senate incumbent to lose renomination since 2012.

Graham did not soften the warning.. In language aimed at enforcing discipline inside the party. he told moderator Kristen Welker that “He voted to impeach President Trump. which would have ruined his political life.” He then escalated to a direct threat aimed at would-be dissenters. saying that any politician who dares to “destroy” Trump’s agenda will be defeated—because. as Graham put it. “this is the party of Donald Trump.”

He broadened the warning beyond Louisiana, pointing to Kentucky Rep.. Thomas Massie and predicting the same outcome once that state’s ballots are tallied Tuesday.. “You can disagree with President Trump. ” Graham said. “but if you try to destroy him. you’re gonna lose because this is the party of Donald Trump.”

Graham also said there was “no room” in the Republican party for members who reach across party lines to challenge Trump.. “If you align with Democrats to stop his agenda like Massie does, you’re going to lose,” Graham said.. He added. “If you align with Democrats to drive him out of office. like Cassidy did. you’re going to lose.”

The framing put Republicans in an uncomfortable spotlight: Cassidy’s loss is being treated as a warning about crossing Trump. yet the broader story inside Louisiana politics is still being described as more complicated by fellow lawmakers.. Sen.. John Kennedy (R-La.) said Cassidy’s downfall was beyond “predictable. ” arguing Cassidy had been in “trouble” with voters for a while.. Kennedy also said Trump’s endorsement of Letlow was just the “icing on the cake.”

Trump, for his part, celebrated the outcome on Sunday, thanking Louisiana voters in a social media post while writing that it was “nice to see that his political career is OVER!” Cassidy had been trashed by Trump in an election day Truth Social post as “a disloyal disaster” and “sleaze bag.”

The pattern Graham laid out is consistent with how the election results played out in Louisiana: Cassidy’s impeachment vote came first in his account. then Trump’s preferred candidate advanced to a runoff. and Graham used that chain to argue that anyone who tries to block Trump’s agenda should expect defeat at the ballot box.
