Gio Urshela did not wait for a spring training announcement or a formal press cycle. He posted his decision straight to his fans from Instagram, writing that he is retiring from baseball and Major League Baseball after 10 seasons.

In the long message, Urshela also sent a short sign-off that landed on its own: “Siempre Agradecido,” or “Forever Grateful.” The timing carries weight for Yankees supporters, because three of his 10 MLB seasons were with New York.

Urshela began his Major League career in 2015 with the Cleveland Guardians. He stayed there for two seasons before a one-year stint with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2018. After that, he joined the Yankees in 2019 and stayed through the 2021 season.

During his time in pinstripes, Urshela produced 6.4 bWAR across 291 games. He recorded 296 hits, including 63 doubles and 41 homers, and drove in 153 runs. His line with the Yankees included a .292 batting average and an .815 OPS.

His postseason work also helped cement his place with fans. Urshela posted a .636 OPS in 17 playoff games, with two home runs and a .740 OPS in 2019.

After the Yankees era ended, his MLB career continued with a 2022 season that moved him through multiple stops. He later played for the Minnesota Twins, Los Angeles Angels, Detroit Tigers, Atlanta Braves, and a final year with the Athletics in 2025.

The sequence of teams mirrors the arc of his career: two seasons with the Cleveland Guardians starting in 2015, a one-year stretch with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2018, three seasons with the Yankees from 2019 through 2021, then later stops that eventually brought him to the Athletics for 2025.

At 34 years old, Urshela is stepping away from baseball after 851 games across 10 seasons, closing a long run that delivered steady production—especially during his Yankees years.
