Apple is planning a more pushy introduction for Genmoji in iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, aiming to get users actually reaching for the feature instead of treating it like a novelty. The change revolves around suggestions—built from what you type and what you already have stored in Photos.
Genmoji users of Messages will recognize the pattern.. When typing in Apple’s software keyboard today, Messages can already offer occasional emoji suggestions.. In iOS 27 and iPadOS 27. the prompts are expected to expand. offering Genmoji that are generated from commonly typed phrases and then “mashed up” with content from your Photos.
Apple also appears to be weighing privacy comfort and user control alongside promotion. A toggle will be available to disable the Suggested Genmoji feature, which would hide the new graphics from view.
The pitch matters because Apple Intelligence hasn’t really caught on with consumers since its introduction in 2024. despite executive claims that it has.. With iOS 27 and iPadOS 27. the goal is to lower the friction: rather than asking people to actively create Genmoji. the system would hand them ready-to-use options while they type.
The change arrives as part of a broader set of Genmoji improvements Apple has already rolled out.. In iOS 26. users were able to create custom expressions using prompts like “Smiling. ” “Shocked. ” or “Sleepy. ” with options to add physical traits such as hair. glasses. and hats.. Apple also improved the AI behind Genmoji for smarter results and higher-quality images. and it added Genmoji support for Tapback reactions.
What ties the updates together is the same direction: creation tools expanded in iOS 26 with more expression controls, while iOS 27 adds a new way to surface Genmoji automatically based on typed phrases and Photos—paired with a disable switch that keeps the feature optional.
Whatever Apple is ready to ship, it will first be shown off at WWDC 2026 in June.
