Fox’s Brit Hume Tsk-Tsks GOP Senator Over Embarrassing Error: ‘He Brought This on Himself’›

Fox News chief political analyst Brit Hume took to social media to share his opinion on Sen. Eric Schmitt’s (R-MO) flub on Capitol Hill, writing, “He brought this on himself.”
Former special counsel Jack Smith testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee earlier today in a hearing focused on his investigations into President Donald Trump, asserting that he’d found “proof beyond a reasonable doubt” that the commander in chief “engaged in serious crimes against our nation.”
Schmitt, though, tried to claim Smith had secretly traveled to Atlanta in 2024 to meet with Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who led her own investigation into Trump, in a moment that has now gone totally viral. Schmitt cited text messages he said placed Smith at an Atlanta Hawks game and accused him of lying about his whereabouts, calling him a “total dirtbag.”
Yet, as Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) noticed in real time before bringing the glaring error to the committee’s attention, Schmitt had confused the Hawks with the Iowa Hawkeyes. Dug-up footage proves that Smith did, indeed, attend an Iowa-Maryland women’s college basketball game on Feb. 3, 2024.
“He brought this on himself and deserves the obloquy,” wrote Hume on X Tuesday, responding to an AI-generated image of the Republican senator depicted as a clown next to a map showing the distance between Atlanta and Maryland, where the game in question took place.
Schmitt was later pressed on the blunder by TMZ DC, but insisted he hadn’t made a “mistake” and had simply asked whether Smith was in Atlanta. When reporter Charlie Cotton noted that video showed Smith at the Hawkeyes game, Schmitt conceded, “Great. Well, then he was at the Hawkeyes game.”
He also made light of the situation on social media with a reference to former Hawkeyes star Caitlin Clark.
Despite his social media activity, though, he didn’t respond to a request for comment from Fox News’ Special Report, with the network’s David Spunt telling anchor Bret Baier on Tuesday’s edition of the show, “We reached out to Senator Schmitt’s office for comment on that dust-up in the Senate Judiciary Committee, but Bret, we have not heard back yet.”
