Job postings for a specific kind of tech work are moving in the opposite direction of the wider layoff wave. Forward-deployed engineer roles — and closely related positions — are drawing fresh attention as companies push AI into real-world workflows, and the hiring numbers reflect that urgency.
In April last year, there were 643 job postings for forward-deployed engineering roles on Indeed. By April 2026, that figure had climbed to 5,330 postings, a rise of about 729% year over year.
The momentum matches statements from tech executives who have tied the role to the next phase of AI rollouts.. Box CEO Aaron Levie said on LinkedIn this week that forward-deployed engineers. or roles that do the equivalent motion. are “about to become one of the most in-demand jobs in tech. ” and that the position is “one of the most important functions for AI rollouts.”
Major companies are also putting forward-deployed engineers at the center of their hiring plans.. Anthropic. OpenAI. Palantir. and Stripe are among the tech firms hiring forward-deployed engineering talent as demand for enterprise AI tools grows.. Earlier this week. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said on LinkedIn that the company was also ramping up hiring for the position. pointing to growing client and partner demand for the company’s AI products.
What forward-deployed engineers do can vary depending on the employer. but the shared idea is that they work directly with companies to integrate AI into workflows and customize AI tools so the technology fits day-to-day work.. The role was popularized by Palantir, which embedded engineers directly with customers to build software tailored to their needs.
Pay levels reported from job data also help explain why the role is attracting attention. According to Indeed data, pay for the role ranges from about $170,000 to over $200,000.
Consulting firms are leaning into the same need for technical fluency.. The consulting industry has become a distribution channel for Silicon Valley’s latest AI innovations. with forward-deployed engineers helping companies “make sense of AI and integrate it into their work.” For firms like McKinsey & Company and Boston Consulting Group. the ideal consultant now must have technical skills.
One job posting for a “Principal Forward Deployment Engineer” at QuantumBlack describes a specific profile: candidates should have more than eight years of hands-on experience in software. platform. or infrastructure engineering. along with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a technical field such as computer science. machine learning. applied statistics. mathematics. engineering. or artificial intelligence.
