First-look images tease Ludwig season two cast

Fresh first-look images for season two of *Ludwig* have landed, and they basically tell you the show isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Comedian David Mitchell—back as John Ludwig—returns alongside Anna Maxwell Martin, who’s stepping in as Lucy again, and the whole setup feels like it’s been left mid-case.

One of the pictures shows Sian Clifford, 44, walking down the stairs as local MP Joanne Kemper. Another has Scottish actor Mark Bonnar, 57, sitting behind a cluttered desk as newspaper editor Gareth Fisher. It’s a small detail, but the image vibe is loud: paper everywhere, the kind of mess you only see when someone’s been working too long.

Misryoum newsroom reported that the cast will include Fleabag star Clifford and Mark Bonnar as regulars, joining the returning team. Other newly released photos put the ensemble in what looks like a police station too—Maxwell Martin standing in front of a crime investigation cork-board, while Ralph Ineson appears as Chief Constable Ziegler.

The next run of *Ludwig*—due to air later this year on BBC iPlayer and BBC One—will pick up from the end of the first series. John is now employed as a crime scene consultant, working alongside Dipo Ola’s DCI Russell Carter on crimes for the Cambridge Police Authority. So, yes, he’s technically back in the system… but it’s not like the system suddenly became simple.

Then there’s the missing twin, which is kind of the whole emotional engine at this point. John’s identical twin brother, James, is still missing, and the consultant has been banned from using any police resources to look for his sibling or uncover exactly what he was investigating. Misryoum editorial desk noted that, of course, John will not stop. Neither will Lucy—wife of the missing brother James—whose involvement keeps turning the private heartbreak into something more dangerous.

Also returning are Dylan Hughes as Henry Betts-Taylor, Dorothy Atkinson as DCS Carol Shaw and Karl Pilkington as DI Matt Neville. Alongside Bonnar and Clifford, Deep Cover’s Ben Ashenden and Mutiny’s Rumi Sutton are joining the cast as well. The series is created and written by Mark Brotherhood and produced by Big Talk Studios, part of ITV Studios, in association with That Mitchell and Webb Company.

And if you’re wondering why everyone’s already talking about it: Misryoum analysis indicates the first season was a big deal. It attracted over 9.5 million viewers in 28 days and became the BBC’s biggest scripted series since 2024, and the biggest comedy launch episode since at least 2018. The second season is arriving with big expectations, plus that particular blend *Ludwig* does—crime procedure, comedy timing, and personal stakes that don’t let go.

The pictures are just a teaser, really. But they’re also a promise: more questions, more paper, more people leaning in close to see what’s going on—while something in the background still refuses to be solved.
