Bruno Fernandes did not just help Manchester United in the latest Premier League clash against Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford. He matched the league’s single-season assist record, then watched it become a full-blown celebration as teammates mobbed him at the moment it was achieved.

The afternoon’s key action came from Fernandes’ low cross, which Bryan Mbeumo turned in for Manchester United’s third goal. That touch made it Fernandes’ 20th assist of the season, tying him with Kevin de Bruyne and Thierry Henry at the same assist total.

Fernandes’ impact was not limited to creativity alone.. Alongside the assist record. he reached a tally of 20 assists and added eight goals this term. taking his overall goal involvement to 28.. Even goalkeeper Senne Lammens joined the excitement. running the length of the pitch to jump onto his captain as the celebration spilled beyond the outfield players.

It also came with the emotion of a season that has swung wildly.. Manchester United’s campaign has been described as up and down under Ruben Amorim and Michael Carrick. and Fernandes’ consistency has stood out in the middle of all that change.. The milestone marked another step for the 31-year-old, who had already taken home the FWA footballer of the year award.

There was, though, a sense of unfinished business embedded in the build-up.. Fernandes originally believed he had equalled the record earlier in the month in United’s 3-2 win over Liverpool.. His nod down had been converted by Benjamin Sesko. but the assist was taken away from Fernandes after Freddie Woodman. the Liverpool goalkeeper. was adjudged to have touched the ball into Sesko’s path.

The pursuit has continued through the smallest margins.. Fernandes came close to a record-breaking 21st assist minutes after that Liverpool moment. when Diogo Dalot smashed an effort against the post.. Still. he was clearly searching for the milestone. with Gary Neville describing him as “goal hanging” in the closing stages of the win over Forest as Fernandes went after history.

One more chance now remains. Fernandes was set for the final day with another opportunity to take sole ownership of the record at the Amex Stadium against Brighton. Even with that storyline, he stressed that the focus is ultimately on collective success.

Speaking after the game. Fernandes said the club understood how important it was for him to get another assist: “Everyone knew that it was important that I could get another assists. and they have tried everything to score from my passes.” He also pointed to moments when he might have played the pass rather than shooting: “There was moments today where I should have passed instead of shooting and still I am very happy for the assists but more than that I am very happy for the win and to finish the season on a high.”

Fernandes acknowledged the attention around his performances, but kept pulling the conversation back to team goals.. “It is a privilege and a pleasure and I won’t hide from that.” He added: “I want collective awards more than anything but knowing your job is being acknowledged by many people.” He referenced the support he has received from teammates as well: “A lot of players came out and said for them I am player of the season and I am very grateful and very happy with it.”

When asked about the final match and the chance to break the record further. he pointed to the immediate reality of needing one more moment to move beyond the equal mark: “Obviously I think got to 20 today. so lets see.” He said one more game would decide the next step. with the manager controlling the selection: “I have one more game. and the manager will decide who plays. I will be happy to do it. but even if I don’t do it I am very happy with it because it is the highest number I’ve ever done.”

That framing matters because the numbers make the milestone feel sharper, not flatter.. Fernandes started the season without an assist in the opening eight games. then turned the campaign into a steady pattern: since that stretch. he has not gone longer than a single game without recording a goal involvement. and he has recorded two assists on three separate occasions in the Premier League.

The relationship between those turning points is hard to miss: after the initial eight-game assist drought. Fernandes’ record run accelerated into an uninterrupted sequence of goal involvements. and when the assist total finally landed at 20 against Forest. it came after an earlier near-miss against Liverpool where the assist was removed despite Sesko’s finish.. In other words. the milestone was both built through consistency and shaped by how tightly official decisions can swing a moment on the final numbers.

Now the focus turns to Brighton. For Manchester United, it’s another heavyweight storyline on an already massive final day—while for Fernandes, the equal mark is no longer the destination, only the checkpoint.
