Fatal Christmas Eve fire in Needham ruled an accident, fire officials say

Fire officials have ruled a Christmas Eve house fire in Needham that killed 21-year-old Kayla Renee Corrigan to be accidental, according to the Department of Fire Services.

Several state and local offices determined the fire, which took place at 28 Woodworth Rd., began in the rightmost of three bays inside an attached garage, according to public information officer Jake Wark. 

Wark wrote power tools, ignitable liquids, and other items were stored in this area, and investigators located the remains of lithium-ion batteries and an electrical outlet with a power strip nearby.

While the cause of the fire is ruled “undetermined” due to multiple potential ignition sources, all the potential sources are “clearly accidental,” Wark wrote in an email.

Agencies involved in the investigation included the Needham fire and police departments, State Police Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office, and State Police assigned to the Norfolk DA’s office. The investigation included examination of the scene and witness interviews, according to Wark.

“They found no evidence of an intentionally set fire,” Wark wrote.

The fire began before 5 a.m. on Dec. 24, 2025, according to the Department of Fire Service’s initial news release. The four-alarm response involved 75 firefighters from across the region and took more than seven hours to control.

Preliminary evidence at the time pointed to an accidental cause, according to the release.

First responding personnel, who attempted entry into the three-story, single-family home, were pushed back by the “raging fire,” which would cause “catastrophic damage,” according to the release.

Two adults were able to escape the fire, but emergency responders located a woman, later identified as Corrigan, deceased inside the house, according to the release.

Corrigan’s obituary remembered the Syracuse University business student for her “infectious personality” and her “uncanny ability to connect with people. She was born in Wisconsin before moving to Needham with her family in 2007.

“Kayla was, and is, irreplaceable. She leaves behind a space that no one else can fill,” the obituary reads. “Her time with us was heartbreakingly short, but she was also bigger than life. The courage, compassion, laughter, and love she brought into the world will remain with us even in her absence.”

“Please hug your family a little tighter tonight and hold one another close,” Needham Police wrote in a December statement.
