Glenora Bears player Eugene Hanna has died aged 30 after an ‘unsurvivable’ injury in the season opener in West Auckland.

Eugene Hanna’s death has shaken New Zealand rugby league and the wider football community after the 30-year-old was fatally injured in what was described as an “unsurvivable” incident during the opening match of the season.

Hanna, who represented the Glenora Bears in the Premier Reserves, suffered the injury in the first game of the campaign on May 2 against the Te Atatū Roosters in West Auckland. He was taken to hospital and remained under medical care for around 10 days before passing away on Tuesday.

Glenora Bears chairwoman Janet Hunt confirmed the news in a statement. describing Hanna as a valued member of the squad who had quickly built strong connections with his teammates despite being a recent addition..
