Ethiopian Opposition Condemns Fatal Police Shooting in Addis Ababa

The Coalition for Ethiopian Unity has denounced the killing of a local man by a police officer, labeling the incident as a symptom of systemic issues in Addis Ababa.
Toronto – Coalition for Ethiopian Unity (CUD) on Saturday released a statement condemning the killing of Tegegne Balcha, a young man who was gunned down in Addis Ababa on Thursday.. Police on Friday said it has arrested the police officer who killed Tegegne Balcha, also known as Ororo.. It said “…the coalition condemns the killings and expresses condolences to the family, friends and residents of Addis Ababa.” “The people need to understand that killing and
robbery is systemic, not an isolated incident,” it said in a brief statement it released.. The coalition went further to paint a grim picture of the ruling party saying that the story is not only a story of one young man.. It rather represents the story of Addis Ababa youth.. “What makes this killing different is that it did not happen undercover or in darkness.. It happened in broad daylight,” The party said.. CEU is
a coalition of four major opposition parties in the country, and has been threatening to withdraw from the Federal election, scheduled for June 2026.. The party shared the story of Ororo gathered from those who knew him.. “Polite, loved by the community and hard working,” are among the descriptions used.. It also said that the deceased lost his livelihood as cultural dress store owner after his store was demolished due to the “corridor development” project..
Addis Ababa Police statement released on Friday said the officer behind the killing is Asst.Sergeant Matheos Temechew, and that he is under investigation (Check story here)..
