Can We Truly Stay Objective? Ethiopia’s Ruling Party Faces Cult-Like Criticism

A new op-ed argues Ethiopia’s Prosperity Party mirrors cult-like dynamics, centering on Abiy Ahmed, narrative control and suppressed debate.

Enköping, Sweden I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Mohamud A.. Ahmed for his thoughtful and respectful engagement with my articles.. Indeed kudos to Mohamud A.. Ahmed!. This exchange serves as a meaningful example in the political arena, demonstrating that constructive dialogue and principled debate are not only possible, but beneficial for all involved.. I have personally valued this discourse and have grown through the process of engaging in such a substantive manner..

To fully appreciate the context and depth of this discussion, I encourage readers to revisit the earlier articles published by both Mohamud A.. Ahmed and myself on this platform.. It will provide a clearer and more complete understanding of the issues at hand.. The present article is written in response to Mohamud A.. Ahmed’s piece titled “Why Ethiopia Cannot Be Reduced to a Single Political Explanation,” which was published on May 13.. While I appreciate

and concur with Mohamud A.. Ahmed’s assertion that no single political theory can fully explain the intricate contours of Ethiopian politics, I wish to proceed directly to the core issue.. My observation of a cult-like political practice and the concept of personification, in my view, offers a compelling lens through which to analyze the current political landscape, though I acknowledge it cannot serve as the sole explanation.. Ethiopia is an ancient state that has navigated

a long and often arduous political journey.. Its contemporary dynamics are shaped by a complex confluence of factors: a challenging geopolitical environment, a multitude of internal political forces, enduring dilemmas over state structure, and the intricate interplay between ethnic identity politics and centralized statehood.. I am not a political historian, but I am acutely aware of this profound complexity.. However, acknowledging this historical and structural complexity must not become an excuse for the current regime

to steer the nation into endless political turmoil and toward the precipice of a failing state.. It is a matter of public record that Ethiopia today serves as a platform for a diverse array of political groups, each with distinct viewpoints, aspirations, needs, and visions for the future.. Yet, within the span of its modern political history, successive regimes including the present one have failed catastrophically to establish a broader political mechanism capable of genuinely

accommodating this diversity of aspirations and outlooks.. This persistent failure to forge an inclusive and resilient political settlement lies at the heart of our ongoing national crisis.. It is important to clarify why the Prosperity Party exhibits characteristics reminiscent of a cult-like structure.. This assessment is not based merely on the absence of a coherent ideological platform or the presence of a populist leader.. In today’s global political landscape, few nations adhere strictly to rigid

ideological doctrines; rather, contemporary governance tends to be hybrid, pragmatic, and grounded in logic, empirical evidence, and reasoned theory.. Competent leaders articulate their policies through tangible realities and rationalexplanations not through spiritual wishful thinking accessible only to a select few who claim unique, unworldly insight.. In political science and sociology, cults particularly those emerging from New Age movements often exhibit distinct traits: a charismatic, central leader; a constructed reality that denies external crises; an absence

of formalized doctrine in favor of the leader’s personal beliefs; and a communal environment that prioritizes devotion over debate.. These characteristics provide a revealing lens through which to analyze Ethiopia’s ruling Prosperity Party (PP) and its leader, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.. Drawing on these features, this analysis outlines three core cult-like attributes and their parallels within the PP’s structure and operation.. 1.. Centralized Charismatic Leadership Over Institutional Doctrine A hallmark of New Age cults is

the reliance on a charismatic leader whose personal spiritual insights supplant formal policies or ideologies.. The leader becomes the sole source of truth, rendering organizational structures redundant.. Similarly, the Prosperity Party lacks coherent policy documents or logical frameworks for governance.. Instead, it operates almost entirely on Abiy Ahmed’s personal spiritual beliefs and impulses.. His background in Pentecostal Christianity and frequent references to divine guidance shape state actions, from peace initiatives to infrastructure projects.. This personalization

of power means that, like a cult leader, Abiy’s word is the de facto doctrine, sidelining institutional processes and creating a political environment where loyalty to the leader trumps adherence to programmatic agendas.. 2.. Constructed Reality and Denial of Crisis Cults often foster an alternate reality, dismissing external threats or suffering as illusions or necessary trials.. Despite Ethiopia’s profound crises including civil war in Tigray, Amhara and Oromia, mass displacement, ethnic violence, and economic collapse

the PP leadership consistently denies or minimizes these realities.. Instead, the government focuses on constructing a narrative of imminent prosperity and unity, exemplified by lavish but economically trivial projects like park renovations, monument constructions, and luxury lodges.. This mirrors the beautification efforts seen in cult compounds, which serve to insulate members from harsh external truths.. By emphasizing superficial achievements, the PP cultivates a false sense of progress, much like a New Age group that ignores

societal ailments in favor of spiritual or aesthetic pursuits.. 3.. The Suppression of Debate in Favor of Devotional Followership In cults, critical discussion is replaced by an environment of uncritical adherence, akin to a religious congregation.. The Prosperity Party has effectively abolished genuine political discourse within its ranks.. There are no meaningful policy debates, internal elections, or platforms for dissent.. Instead, the party functions as a “church” where Abiy’s sermons, whether delivered in speeches or

through symbolic acts, are met with devotional acceptance.. This erasure of political deliberation transforms the party into a vehicle for personalist rule, where members are followers, not policymakers.. The atmosphere echoes New Age movements that prioritize communal harmony and leader worship over rigorous inquiry, stifling the democratic processes essential for addressing Ethiopia’s complex challenges.. In my view, the Prosperity Party’s operational model bears striking resemblances to cult-like dynamics observed in New Age movements.. Its dependence

on Abiy Ahmed’s personal spirituality, denial of acute national crises, and substitution of political debate with devotional followership collectively undermine institutional governance.. For Ethiopia, this poses significant risks: without structured policies, accountability mechanisms, or engagement with reality, the country’s turmoil may deepen.. Researchers and observers must recognize these patterns not as mere political shortcomings but as systemic features of a regime that prioritizes leader-centric control over effective governance.. Understanding these parallels is crucial for analyzing

Ethiopia’s trajectory and the broader implications of cult-like characteristics in modern political movements.. My analysis of the Prosperity Party is not intended as a singular, all-encompassing theory to explain Ethiopian politics.. Rather, it serves as a lens, a nuanced perspective through which to understand the current regime, its operational mechanisms, and the underlying reasons for its present conduct.. I hope it offers one additional viewpoint to enrich our broader examination.. Within any regime, the leader

functions as a pivotal figure.. The leader’s beliefs, aspirations, and even personal disposition resonate throughout the entire structure and this has been evident in the case of Abiy Ahmed.. Abiy himself has affirmed this reality through his numerous speeches, writings, and public discourses.. Thus, this dimension undeniably contributes to the political turmoil the nation is experiencing.. That said, I want to emphasize that my cult analysis is not presented as the sole explanatory factor.. I

respect and welcome disagreement with this interpretation.. What I seek, however, is substantive counterargument, a reasoned perspective that challenges or contradicts the portrayal I have offered of the Prosperity Party.. Such engagement would foster a more objective and balanced discourse.. Conversely, merely dismissing the analysis without offering an alternative explanation risks veering into intellectual avoidance, rather than constructive debate..
