Energy Crisis Pushes Nations to Quit Fossil Fuels

fossil fuel – Colombia and the Netherlands convene dozens of countries to speed the phase-out of oil, gas, and coal as energy insecurity grows.
A global energy crunch is forcing governments to reconsider what powers their economies, and a new international push is taking aim directly at oil, gas, and coal.
In Santa Marta. Colombia. Misryoum reports that Colombia and the Netherlands co-hosted a two-day conference focused on “transitioning away from fossil fuels.” Representatives from more than 50 countries gathered to map concrete steps for cutting fossil fuel production and lowering emissions across energy systems and trade.
The talks unfolded against a backdrop of a warming planet and a volatile energy market that has raised concerns about reliability and affordability.. For countries facing climate risks and heavy reliance on imported energy. the transition is not just an environmental goal but an economic and security strategy.
In this context, the emphasis on practical coordination signals a shift in how many governments are thinking about the energy transition: less as a distant aspiration, more as a near-term response to real-world stress on power supplies and budgets.
Officials and experts at the conference discussed ways to move faster. including redirecting subsidies away from fossil fuels toward renewable generation and grid-support technologies such as batteries.. Another theme was employment and regional stability. acknowledging that workers tied to fossil fuel industries. including coal mining communities in Colombia. will need support as energy systems change.
Misryoum notes that the conference also launched a new scientific panel on the energy transition. aiming to strengthen the evidence base for decisions that need to be made quickly.. Organizers positioned the meeting as complementary to United Nations climate talks. reflecting frustration that longstanding negotiations often stall on shared language and implementation details.
This matters because agreement on timing and mechanisms can be the difference between gradual change and accelerated deployment. When international conversations become operational, they help governments and companies translate targets into investments, infrastructure, and policy.
Still, the direction of travel is not uniform.. Some major fossil fuel producers and large energy consumers did not participate. while discussions at the conference included differing views on whether future frameworks should be legally binding or rely on nonbinding commitments.. At the close of the event. Tuvalu and Ireland announced they will co-host the next conference. to be held in Tuvalu.
Misryoum says speakers emphasized the scale of the challenge. Scientists argue that returning to a safe temperature path requires rapidly accelerating the shift away from fossil fuels, but they also framed the meeting as a sign of momentum among “doers” ready to act.
