Alabama rural – Troy University says Mt. Moriah Farms in Dothan received Alabama’s Rural-Owned Small Business of the Year and will be celebrated May 5.
A Wiregrass entrepreneur is being spotlighted for building a small business out of family agriculture and a niche product line, with Alabama recognition now bringing attention to local growth efforts.
Misryoum reports that Mia Scott, owner of Mt.. Moriah Farms in Dothan. has been named Alabama’s Rural-Owned Small Business of the Year as part of the 2026 National Small Business Week honors.. The award places her operation among a limited group of businesses recognized statewide this year. with Troy University announcing it plans a community event to celebrate the achievement and highlight available support for entrepreneurs.
Misryoum says the Dothan-area farm began as a rural. family-owned dairy goat business and evolved over time around Nigerian Dwarf goats and handcrafted products.. That shift eventually led to a broader line of goat milk soaps and skincare items. blending agriculture with small-batch production and creating a business model tied to community connections.
In this context, the recognition underscores how rural business success often depends on more than a good idea, including planning, marketing, and access to practical help.
Misryoum reports that a key part of Scott’s growth came through Troy University’s Small Business Development Center.. After completing an SBDC business course in December 2022. the owner received guidance intended to bring structure to the business. with support that focused on marketing. branding. and e-commerce development.. Misryoum also notes that Mt.. Moriah Farms has since grown to include part-time staff. apprenticeship opportunities. and broader retail distribution. with products carried by multiple local shops.
Meanwhile. Troy University says the planned event will serve a dual purpose: honoring Scott’s recognition and inviting others to learn how to tap into resources in their area.. The session, scheduled for Tuesday, May 5 at 4 p.m.. at the Troy University Dothan Campus. will feature a discussion titled “Small Business Resources in Your Community. ” along with a presentation from the U.S.. Small Business Administration covering services and products for small businesses.
For many owners and aspiring entrepreneurs, these kinds of gatherings matter because they connect local success stories to the broader support systems available through federal and university-backed programs.
Misryoum reports the event is open to the public. and the university says attendees will be able to meet SBDC staff. connect with SBA representatives. and learn about assistance options for different stages of business development.. The focus is both celebratory and practical, aiming to keep attention on entrepreneurship beyond the award itself.
