Ella Bright, who plays Hannah Wells in Amazon Prime Video’s Off Campus, says she’s the one singing on-screen—after working with vocal coaches and music teachers throughout production, and putting in serious time on piano and guitar with co-star Josh Heuston.
When Amazon Prime Video’s new series Off Campus puts music at the center of the story, viewers are bound to wonder one thing: is the actress behind Hannah Wells actually singing?
Ella Bright—who plays singer-songwriter Hannah Wells—answered that question plainly.. During production. she worked with a vocal coach and teachers to get the music right. and she even visited the studio on her days off.. Her co-star Josh Heuston, who plays fellow musician Justin Kohl, was also involved in the same kind of preparation.. Both of them leaned into learning piano and guitar so they wouldn’t need hand (or vocal) doubles for the show.
“I feel very happy to say that it was all me,” Ella shared. She also described being extremely nervous about the music at the start, before it eventually became one of her favorite parts of the series.
Off Campus also gives viewers a taste of Hannah Wells’ voice—while Ella’s real-life accent is a different story.. In the show, she delivers a convincing American accent, but she has a strong British one in real life.. In an interview with Island Magazine. Ella said she was born in New York and that her parents are American. yet she “spent the first five years” of her life “between New York and London.”
“I find it cool that I get to tell people I was born in New York, as I have a British accent, so nobody would know. Both my parents have American accents, though, so sometimes it kind of throws people off when they hear us speak together!” she said.
The production choices and the performance payoff line up: Ella trained with a vocal coach and teachers, paired that work with piano and guitar practice alongside Josh Heuston, and then confirmed that—despite nerves early on—it was “all me” when the singing reached the screen.
