Eli Manning says refusing Chargers was his choice
Eli Manning says his refusal to play for the Chargers after being drafted first overall in 2004 was his decision, not driven by his father Archie Manning. He also recalls tension with the Chargers’ direction, the fear of being traded to the Browns, and how a d
Eli Manning’s earliest star-studded chapter didn’t start with a touchdown drive. It began with a stand after the Chargers selected him first overall in 2004—and Manning now says the choice to reject San Diego wasn’t something his father made for him.
Manning appeared on Bussin’ With The Boys and said he and agent Tom Condon were aligned that San Diego was the wrong place for him.. In that same telling. he pushed back on the long-held belief that former NFL quarterback Archie Manning had been behind the move.. “My parents really weren’t supportive.. My dad didn’t like the idea,” Manning said.. He added that Archie later backed him after the fallout, while absorbing criticism.. “Now, he came to my defense and like supported me after everything was going down, but .. .. .. he didn’t like that.”
Manning described how Archie “took the brunt of a lot of the criticism” because people questioned the motive behind the pushback—pointing to the fact Manning had played in New Orleans and arguing he was trying to dictate his son’s destination.. In Manning’s account. Archie responded by staying quiet publicly: “And afterwards he took the brunt of a lot of the criticism because he came to my defense and people were saying. ‘Oh. you played in New Orleans all those years you didn’t win. so you’re trying to dictate like where your son’s going.’ And and he just bit his tongue and said. ‘Hey. this is what Eli wants to do and I support him’ and he did some media to try to save me from doing all the media and taking the hits.”
Manning also said he respected Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer but believed the team had internal strain.. He pointed to friction between Schottenheimer. the front office. and ownership. and said he did not feel San Diego was moving in the right direction.. “San Diego had the first pick, I didn’t really want to go there,” Manning said.. “I just didn’t feel like they were the most committed team to winning at the time.”
When the possibility of a trade came up. Manning said Condon told him the Chargers were going to trade him to the Browns—and he didn’t want that outcome either.. “When the possibility of a trade came up. Condon told Manning the Chargers were going to trade him to the Browns. and he didn’t want to go there. either.”
The end of the standoff brought a different result: Manning said the Giants and Chargers ultimately made a deal, and he went on to win two Super Bowl MVPs in New York.
The connective tissue in Manning’s timeline is straightforward: he and agent Tom Condon viewed San Diego as the wrong fit. his parents disagreed initially while Archie later supported him through criticism. and friction inside the Chargers helped shape his belief the team wasn’t “committed…to winning at the time.” From there. the trade fear escalated—since the Browns were the destination Manning was told to expect—until the Giants-Chargers deal redirected his career toward New York.
