Discord Nitro adds Xbox Game Pass starter perk

Discord Nitro’s 10th anniversary Nitro Rewards now bundles a Game Pass “starter edition” with cloud gaming access in eligible countries.

A Discord Nitro subscription is about to look more like a gaming bundle than a pure chat add-on, with the platform rolling out a Game Pass perk that’s aimed at getting more subscribers into Microsoft’s library.

The new benefit is tied to a refreshed Nitro Rewards program marking Nitro’s 10th anniversary.. As part of the rollout. subscribers can get access to an Xbox Game Pass “starter edition. ” described as a “starter edition” that closely resembles Microsoft’s Essential tier naming.. With the addition of this tier into the conversation, the service now has five Game Pass versions in total.

Xbox Game Pass starter edition includes access to more than 50 console and PC games. and the list already includes titles such as Fallout 4. Stardew Valley. DayZ. Deep Rock Galactic. Overcooked 2. and Grounded.. The catalog is expected to expand over time, with additional games added as the offer develops.

Alongside the game library, the starter edition adds a cloud gaming allowance of 10 hours per month.. That’s positioned as a more limited option compared with Essential, which includes unlimited cloud gaming.. In this context. the perk also emphasizes flexibility for players who want to stream select titles rather than rely only on local play.

Nitro subscribers who don’t currently hold an Xbox Game Pass subscription will be able to take the starter edition offer.. For now. the offer is limited to a specific set of countries. including Australia. Austria. Belgium. Canada. Czech Republic. Denmark. Finland. France. Germany. Hungary. India. Ireland. Italy. Japan. Mexico. Netherlands. New Zealand. Norway. Poland. Portugal. Slovakia. South Korea. Spain. Sweden. Switzerland. the United Kingdom. and the United States.

Discord said the Nitro Rewards benefits will be introduced gradually to all eligible subscribers over the next several weeks. It also clarified that Nitro pricing is not changing for the moment, with Nitro remaining at $10 per month or $100 per year.

Not every tier is eligible. Subscribers on Nitro Basic and Nitro Classic won’t be able to receive the Nitro Rewards package, meaning the new gaming perk is directed at the tiers Discord considers eligible for the program.

The Game Pass starter edition is only one piece of the expanded rewards picture.. Discord is also including discounts on certain gaming brands at launch. offering 30% off Logitech G. 15% off SteelSeries. and 20% off KontrolFreek gear.. For users who prefer in-platform incentives. Discord says members will have more ways to earn Orbs. the currency used to unlock avatar and profile customizations.

Meanwhile. another part of the overlap between the two ecosystems is already in motion: Microsoft is set to offer Discord Nitro benefits to Game Pass subscribers.. Starting later in May. those users are expected to receive 250 Discord Orbs every month. along with additional Orbs for completing Quests and discounts in the Discord shop.

This cross-pollination matters because it reflects how both companies are trying to make their subscriptions feel more “worth it” in everyday use.. By attaching cloud gaming hours. a rotating set of games. and avatar customization perks to Nitro. Discord effectively ties chat engagement to a broader gaming identity.. For Microsoft, the approach pushes Discord’s customization and incentives toward Game Pass audiences, potentially increasing engagement on both sides.

There is also a practical tension in how the offerings are shaped: starter edition’s 10 hours of cloud gaming per month is a clear constraint compared with unlimited cloud streaming under Essential.. For players. that difference can influence whether the perk feels like a full substitute for Game Pass Essentials or more like an entry ticket that complements what they already own in their Xbox library.

Region limits and phased availability add another layer for users trying to decide when to claim the benefit.. With the rollout scheduled to expand over the coming weeks. interested subscribers in eligible countries may still need to wait for the update to appear. while those outside the listed regions will likely have to watch for future expansion.

Finally. Discord’s decision to keep Nitro pricing steady while introducing additional rewards is likely to be a key selling point.. If more perks continue to arrive over time through Nitro Rewards. the value proposition may shift from “premium chat features” toward a broader bundle that blends gaming access. brand discounts. and persistent customization incentives for Orbs.

  1. So Discord’s turning into a mini storefront now. First it was chat, then subscriptions, and now “Nitro Rewards” is basically trying to sell me Game Pass with extra steps. I guess it’s working though.

  2. John Miller, it makes sense strategically. Discord already has Nitro as the recurring payment, and bundling Game Pass “starter” is a clear value add, especially since it includes 50+ games plus 10 hours/month of cloud streaming. They’re essentially lowering the barrier for Nitro users to try Xbox’s catalog without giving away the full Essential tier.

  3. I’m not sure I love the “starter edition” framing. Sarah Johnson is right that it’s a smart bundle, but 10 hours/month for cloud gaming sounds tight if you actually want to stream regularly. John Miller also nailed the bigger point: Discord is drifting from communication into competing with actual gaming subscription services.

  4. John Miller, I get why you’re skeptical, but I’d still try it. If you’re already paying for Nitro, getting access to a bunch of games and some cloud time feels like a pretty decent add-on, especially since it’s limited regions at launch anyway.
