Derrick Henry’s age test keeps him in pace

After a heavy 31st season, Derrick Henry insists he’s not slowing down—while acknowledging he would stop if his body signals Father Time has caught up.

Derrick Henry is 31, but last season’s numbers didn’t match the usual script for running backs in their next birthday cycle. In his age-31 season with the Baltimore Ravens, Henry carried the ball 307 times for 1,521 yards and 16 touchdowns.

When the rushing leaderboard was being sorted. only James Cook of the Bills had more rushing yards. and only Jonathan Taylor of the Indianapolis Colts found the end zone on the ground more often.. Taylor was listed as the 2025 leader with 18 rushing touchdowns. and Henry’s 16 ground scores kept him among the top finishers in a category that often becomes harder as players move past their early thirties.

Henry told reporters he still believes he has more football left. framing his decision as something driven by how he feels rather than by age alone.. “Yeah, I don’t see myself stopping, not any time soon.. But if I feel like Father Time has caught up with me. and I feel like my body’s telling me it’s probably time to shut it down. then yeah. I would do that.. I’m not going to try to overdo it.. But if I feel good. and I feel I can still compete and play at a high level. I’m going to go out and do that.. But I’m definitely not going to overdo it, for sure.”

The picture drawn by the season totals and the quote lines up in one clear way: a workload of 307 carries and 1,521 rushing yards produced 16 touchdowns, and Henry’s own explanation ties his future to whether his body signals a stop rather than a fixed timeline.

The running tradition around him is built on sustained scoring. Henry has peeled off double-digit rushing touchdowns in each of the last eight seasons, and he has led the league in that category three times, including as recently as 2024.
