Deputies contest P&R vacancy as leadership uncertainty grows

A scramble for a vacant Policy & Resources seat is underway as deputies weigh in on the committee's future following Gavin St Pier's resignation and re-election bid.

A fresh political battle is brewing within the States as deputies line up to fill a sudden vacancy on the Policy & Resources committee, even as the incumbent seeks to reclaim his seat immediately.

Deputy Haley Camp has confirmed her intention to challenge Gavin St Pier for the position at the upcoming 20 May meeting. St Pier, who serves as the committee’s vice-president and treasury lead, announced his resignation and immediate plan to stand for re-election following his recent arrests.

This high-stakes scramble reflects the deep divisions within the current government as members weigh the need for institutional stability against the optics of the ongoing legal situation surrounding St Pier.

Other potential contenders are beginning to emerge, with Marc Laine reportedly considering a bid. Meanwhile, Deputy Jayne Ozanne has expressed interest but noted she would prefer the committee’s formal backing before committing to the race.

Deputy Helyar, however, has firmly ruled out a return to the senior committee. He expressed frustration with the current state of governance, citing a lack of confidence in the existing group’s ability to drive necessary civil service reforms.

St Pier appears to be banking on significant support from his peers, with estimates suggesting as many as 18 members might back his return.. Despite this, critics like Scrutiny president Andy Sloan have questioned the appropriateness of seeking a political mandate while legal proceedings remain unresolved.

For the public, this contest serves as a litmus test for whether the Assembly prioritizes established leadership continuity or opts for a reset to distance the government from recent scandals.

As the debate over the committee’s direction intensifies, questions remain regarding how these internal power dynamics will impact the upcoming landmark tax and spending discussions.. The stability of the government’s fiscal agenda hangs in the balance as members prepare for the vote later this month.

Ultimately, the outcome of this vote will signal whether the States aims to maintain the status quo or if a majority of members believe that a change in leadership is vital to restoring public confidence.
