Kyiv is counting the dead after a Russian missile hit a residential apartment building, pushing the toll to 24, including three children, Zelenskyy said.
In a statement posted Friday on X, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said emergency workers had finished digging through the rubble of a nine-story corner block after more than a day of rescue operations. He said the cruise missile struck the building the previous day, killing 24 people.
Ukraine’s air force said the attack came during what it described as Russia’s biggest barrage of the country since the all-out invasion. Zelenskyy said the cruise missile attack was concentrated on the Ukrainian capital, where 48 people were wounded, including two children.
The assault unfolded after a May 9–11 ceasefire. which Trump said he asked both Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin to observe.. Fighting continued over those 72 hours. though reportedly at a lesser scale. and the renewed scale of attacks has run against recent signals from both leaders that the war—now in its fifth year—could be close to ending.
Zelenskyy said that Moscow had launched more than 1,560 drones against Ukrainian population centers since Wednesday.. He added that the attacks damaged some 180 sites across the country, including more than 50 residential buildings.. He pointed to the previous high point in drone activity. saying the largest earlier strike was from the evening of March 23 to the evening of March 24. when Moscow fired nearly 1. 000 drones and missiles at Ukraine.
On Friday, Kyiv marked an official day of mourning for those killed. Zelenskyy said Ukrainian experts had analyzed the wreckage of the cruise missile that hit the apartment building and determined it was built in the second quarter of this year.
In a separate post late Thursday. Zelenskyy argued that the timing and supply chain behind the weapon showed continued dependence on imported components.. “This means Russia is still importing the components. resources. and equipment necessary for missile production in circumvention of global sanctions. ” he wrote on X.. He added that stopping Russia’s sanctions evasion schemes should be a priority for partners.
While the funerary phase unfolded in the capital, negotiations continued in parallel on another front.. Zelenskyy said Russia and Ukraine carried out further prisoner swaps, with 205 people returned from each country on Friday.. He described it as the first phase of a planned 1. 000-for-1. 000 exchange. adding that some of the Ukrainians released had been held in Russian captivity since 2022 and had fought in some of the war’s fiercest battles.
Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed the exchange and said it thanked the United Arab Emirates for helping broker it.

this is why i dont trust anything coming out of that region
wait so the ceasefire literally meant nothing?? they agreed to stop and then just kept going anyway that is insane to me. three children died in that building and people are still out here defending putin like what is wrong with you people
i read that zelenskyy actually refused the ceasefire first which is probably why russia started bombing again, like you cant just reject peace and then act surprised when things escalate. not saying its right but thats what i heard on a podcast. either way 24 people dead is horrible but we gotta look at the full picture here and the media never shows you that side of it. trump tried to stop this and they ignored him so
my heart breaks for those families honestly i cant even imagine waking up one morning and your whole building is just gone, like these are regular people just living their lives not soldiers not politicians just regular moms and dads and kids and then some missile just decides thats it for them. ive been following this war since it started and every time i think it cant get worse it gets worse. i remember when everyone said it would be over in a few weeks and here we are years later still reading these same horrible headlines. i dont know what the answer is i really dont but somebody has to do something because 1500 drones in a few days is not a country trying to find peace thats a country trying to destroy everything
