DC Mayor Bowser looks back on her accomplishments in education during ribbon-cutting – WTOP News

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and other city leaders came together for a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday for the unveiling of a modernized school in Northwest D.C.

Harriet Tubman Elementary School, located at 13th Street NW, is one of a handful of schools that received a major face-lift in the District this year, with several new amenities. That includes new music rooms, a kitchen, a cafeteria and yoga studio, according to the Department of General Services.

Harriet Tubman Elementary School completed a $91 million project which dramatically improved the school built in the 1960s.

Bowser also took the time to highlight some of her accomplishments during her three terms as mayor.

“Almost 20 years of school reform has transformed our public school system from a 70,000-kid system to a 100,000-student system,” Bowser said.

She also celebrated the millions of dollars invested in more than 60 schools.

When asked what she would like to see from her successor when it comes to education, Bowser said she would like to see more investments.

“We want to continue to have great leadership. We want the mayor and the council to be responsible for the direction of the schools,” she said.

The next mayor is scheduled to take office in January 2027, following the November election.

“We have learned a lot of lessons in D.C. that are working: consistent investments in buildings and making sure we have the best of the best teachers,” Bowser said.

Bowser named Dr. Kim Jackson interim chancellor of D.C. Public Schools in June.
