Conor McGregor is stepping back into the octagon in July, with UFC President Dana White announcing that the MMA superstar will face Max Holloway on July 11 in Las Vegas.

The fight will be McGregor’s first in the cage since 2021, when he lost to Dustin Poirier by TKO.. That bout left McGregor with a broken leg that required surgery.. McGregor, 37, enters the moment as the sport’s biggest commercial draw, a status reflected in pay-per-view history.. The top four pay-per-views featuring the Irish fighter included 2.4 million buys for his bout against Khabib Nurmagomedov and 1.8 million against Poirier in his last fight.. Even outside the UFC, his 2017 boxing match against Floyd Mayweather Jr.. produced 4.3 million PPV buys and more than $600 million in total revenue, according to Showtime.

For the sport’s matchup, the pairing brings familiarity as much as it does novelty.. McGregor previously defeated Holloway via unanimous decision in 2013.. Holloway. 34. is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Charles Oliveira in March. and White’s announcement puts him in position to try to rebound against a longtime rival.

McGregor’s return also lands amid a difficult stretch in the rankings.. He is a former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion and was the first fighter to hold titles in two divisions simultaneously.. Still, he has dropped three of his last four bouts, including one loss to Nurmagomedov and two straight to Poirier.

His record stands at 22-6 entering the July fight. Holloway’s record is 26-9.

The comeback comes with an equally complicated public history. In 2019, McGregor was caught on camera punching an older man in a bar and later pleaded guilty to assault, for which he paid a fine. He also knocked out the Miami Heat mascot during a promotional stunt at an NBA game.

In 2024, a civil court jury in Ireland found McGregor sexually assaulted a woman six years earlier. The woman was awarded 250,000 Euros, or $257,000.

The timeline around McGregor’s next fight mirrors the pattern of his last few chapters: a bout in 2021 ended with a broken leg and surgery. a planned 2024 appearance was derailed by a toe injury. and his performance history since then includes three losses in four fights. leading up to a return opponent he already beat in 2013.

For fans. July 11 in Las Vegas is set to mark the first time in five years that McGregor steps back into the cage.. For the UFC. it’s a high-stakes gamble with a fighter whose career has repeatedly delivered massive attention even as injuries and legal issues have complicated his path back to the spotlight.
