Oklahoma City’s Western Conference Finals week arrives with a key question hanging over the Thunder: will Jalen Williams be able to return soon enough to matter in Game 1?

Mark Daigneault. the Thunder head coach. gave reporters a fresh look at Williams’ status as Oklahoma City prepares for its best-of-7 series against the Spurs.. Williams missed the Thunder’s Game 4 victory that eliminated the Los Angeles Lakers. and Daigneault said the forward could be in line to come back for Game 1.

On Williams’ left hamstring injury, Daigneault kept the message straightforward. “Progressing. Same stuff. I’m not going to give you the blow-by-blow on the details,” he said. “But he continues to make progress, and is doing a great job.”

Williams suffered the injury in Game 2 of Oklahoma City’s first-round series against the Phoenix Suns. Before Oklahoma City ruled Williams out for the defending champions’ second-round run against the Lakers, he was considered week-to-week.

With Williams sidelined. the forward took time to address a different kind of attention—an ongoing foul-baiting narrative aimed at Shai Gilgeous-Alexander when people discuss his greatness.. Williams. who advanced to the Western Conference Finals while watching from the outside. spoke about what he believes fans and critics miss when they focus only on numbers.

“People don’t actually know what they’re watching with Shai,” Williams said in a recent interview. “They just see numbers and don’t understand the experience. I wish everyone could sit courtside once in their life just to watch what he does.”

Williams also framed his respect for Gilgeous-Alexander in personal terms. acknowledging that being forced to observe—rather than play—has changed how he measures the level of impact.. He called Gilgeous-Alexander on “a different level than his peers. ” tying that belief to the experience of watching closely from the sideline.

The timeline laid out by Oklahoma City is tight and specific: Williams’ left hamstring injury began in Game 2 versus the Suns. he moved from week-to-week to ruled out for the Lakers series. then he missed the Lakers elimination in Game 4—yet Daigneault’s latest wording leaves the door open for a Game 1 return against San Antonio.

Oklahoma City will host the Spurs in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals on Monday.
