Crawford injury rocks Mariners as Padres sweep

JP Crawford left the Mariners’ 8-3 loss to the Padres after being struck by a 91.6 mph fastball, and Seattle’s offense managed only one hit in the series finale. The defeat dropped the Mariners to 22-26 while San Diego completed a six-game season series sweep.

In the third inning of Sunday’s 8-3 loss to the San Diego Padres at T-Mobile Park. the Mariners shortstop was hit on the right triceps by a 91.6 mph fastball from Padres starter Lucas Giolito.. Crawford initially stayed in the game after the hit-by-pitch, but discomfort grew.. He eventually left before the fifth inning due to inflammation and limited throwing extension. with manager Dan Wilson describing the exit that way.. Utilityman Leo Rivas replaced him.
The injury came as Seattle was already struggling to get traction offensively.. The Mariners produced only one hit in the entire game—a single from Luke Raley in the second inning—and went 0-for-2 with runners in scoring position. leaving five men on base.. After a scoreless stretch. all three of Seattle’s runs arrived in the sixth inning. a frame that began with Giolito issuing three consecutive walks.
San Diego’s lead formation began early.. Gavin Sheets hit a solo home run in the first inning. and Ty France added an RBI single in the fifth.. The Padres then put the game out of reach with a five-run sixth inning featuring Sheets’ second home run and further RBI contributions from Jackson Merrill and France.
On the mound, George Kirby could not consistently contain the Padres’ bats, allowing six earned runs on six hits.. He finished with six strikeouts and two walks over 5.2 innings.. Giolito. making his San Diego debut. limited Seattle to one hit. but his command faltered after the walks piled up; he was lifted after issuing three straight free passes in the sixth.. Yuki Matsui came out of the bullpen and walked Josh Naylor. then Randy Arozarena and Rob Refsnyder followed with sacrifice flies.
Crawford, 31, had entered the game hitting .217/.361/.377 with six home runs, four doubles, and a .738 OPS across 39 games. He is also the Mariners’ longest-tenured player.
Seattle’s situation already includes multiple injuries, with Cal Raleigh, Victor Robles, Matt Brash, and Gabe Speier all on the injured list, and Crawford now adding to the challenge after Sunday’s exit.
The standings only tightened the blow.. The loss dropped Seattle to 22-26. third in the AL West. two games behind the Athletics and one game out of the final AL wild card position behind the Texas Rangers.. It also completed a six-game season series sweep by the Padres.. The homestand continues Monday against the Chicago White Sox, with Bryan Woo scheduled to start against Noah Schultz.
