Reading Time: 4 minutes From today onwards, some commuters will fork out E20 more in transport fares, something most have not anticipated.. Some of the affected routes include the Manzini-Mpuluzi route, which announced the adjusted fares on Friday.. The new prices are set to take effect today, according to a notice inside one of the buses ferrying commuters between Manzini and Mpuluzi.. According to a source, commuters travelling from Manzini to Mpuluzi would be expected
to pay E20 more, as fares are now being aligned with the maximum prices stipulated in the Maximum Bus and Taxi Fares (Amendment) Regulations, 2022, published as a Legal Notice in the Eswatini Government Gazette Extraordinary in April 2022.. The notice issued on Friday regarding the adjusted fares indicates that commuters travelling to Mpuluzi will now pay E70 instead of the E50 they were paying last week.. Those travelling to Dingizwe will also pay E15
more, as fares have increased from E50 to E65.. Commuters travelling to Matseni will now pay E60, which is an increase of E17 from the E43 they were previously paying.. Those travelling to Mgotshane will now pay E55 instead of E45.. Commuters using the same route but travelling from Matseni are also expected to spend E10 more on transport, as they will now pay E53 instead of E43.. Those commuting from Jesus to Manzini are
now going to pay E42 instead of E35, representing an increase of E7.. According to the notice, commuters travelling from Nkomo and Hhashini will pay E10 more when travelling from Manzini.. These commuters were paying E40 but will now pay E50.. Commuters from Sigodvweni will now pay E47, an increase of E7 from the E40 they were previously paying.. Those from Mphakatsi are expected to pay E10 more.. This route is mostly used by members
of the public travelling to Zondwako Clinic.. Those commuting from Jesus will also pay E7 more, as they will now pay E42 instead of E35.. Residents from the Bhunya area are also going to experience fare increases of E5.. These commuters were paying E30 instead of the gazetted E35 fare.. placed source operating along the route, the fares were increased so as to align with the maximum prices stipulated in the gazette.. ALSO READ | Public transport operators want 25% fare hike He said operators decided to increase fares to the maximum threshold so that they do not encounter challenges should government approve another fare increase on top of the fares set in 2022.. He said operators had been charging reduced fares since the COVID-19
period.. He added that they were now charging the exact fares stated in the regulations so that commuters will not face larger increases once another fare hike is approved.. “We are doing this to prepare commuters because we have been charging them less.. We do not want them to feel robbed when we increase fares by E30 while we should only be adding E10 on the maximum hikes,” he said.. Meanwhile, on Saturday, Ministry of
Public Works and Transport Principal Secretary Thulani Mkhaliphi said although the ministry understood the sudden pressure caused by rising transport operational costs, it was appealing to transporters to remain within the gazetted allowable fares until discussions on fare adjustments resulting from unforeseen economic pressures were concluded.. He informed the public that, together with the National Road Transportation Council, they were actively consulting on the matter, including exploring the implementation of the 2022 Parliament resolution on
bus fare adjustments in future years.. “The public will be informed through appropriate channels once the discussions are concluded and we shall endeavour to do so with the urgency that this matter deserves,” he said.. He added that the ministry had noted global economic events which, among other things, were influencing unprecedented increases in fuel prices.. He said fuel prices had increased by about 63 per cent over the past four months and, since fuel
was a significant driver of transportation costs, this had pushed public transport operational costs to unprecedented levels.. Mkhaliphi further stated that, as a result, public transport operators had been forced to review the discounted bus fares they had been offering commuters since 2022, particularly for long-distance commuters travelling eight kilometres and above, and revert to the allowable gazetted maximum fares.. He said the willingness of transporters to offer discounts to commuters when economic conditions allowed
was appreciated.. He said, since the last gazette amendment in 2022, transport operators should continue following the existing regulations while discussions on possible revised fares continued.. Mkhaliphi said short-distance routes were the first to transition to the maximum fares, while long-distance routes were still charging below the gazetted maximum fares.. He said operators who had not yet reached the maximum fares were still allowed to do so.. “We are asking that they follow the law
and abide by it until we conclude the negotiations.. If there are people charging more, there are inspectors responsible for that and they should take action,” he said.. Meanwhile, NRTC Chairperson Sabelo Dlamini stated that some transport operators had not been charging the maximum fares stipulated in the gazette, but were instead charging lower fares.. He said operators sometimes rounded up fares for convenience, particularly because some required 50-cent coins to provide change.. He added
that they would abide by the ministry’s directive by charging at least the maximum gazetted fares until negotiations, which were still ongoing, were concluded.. The Maximum Bus and Taxi Fares (Amendment) Regulations, 2022, published as a Legal Notice in the Eswatini Government Gazette Extraordinary in April 2022, stipulate that the route from Manzini to Mbabane had adjusted fares, reaching a maximum of E33.10.. However, commuters are currently paying E30 when using a Quantum and E25
when travelling by bus.. This route has not yet announced any adjusted fares to reach the maximum allowable prices.. The maximum fare commuters were supposed to pay when travelling from Manzini to Mbabane was E33.10, meaning the expected increase could be E3.10 for Quantums and E8.10 for buses, as commuters are currently paying a maximum of E30.. Some areas where commuters were paying less than the maximum gazetted fares include Sitibeni in Mbabane, where commuters
were supposed to pay E10.50 but were currently paying E10.. Residents from Nkoyoyo were also paying fares that were 50 cents lower.
