Chubby Chandler backs Lowry to end major drought

Shane Lowry can end his major duck and take home one of the biggest prizes in golf this year. That is the opinion of Rory McIlroy’s former agent Chubby Chandler, who believes the Irishman may have the quality to at least come close in one of the final two majors of the year. Lowry’s sole major title came back at the Open in 2019 , and while he has only won one individual title since, he has shown major form, twice being in contention at

the Masters before blowing up on the final day. With the US Open at Shinnecock in a couple of weeks before the Open at Royal Birkdale in July, Lowry has two more chances to ensure his drought doesn’t go into an eighth year, and Chandler thinks he can get the job done if things go his way. “Shane is a good player, he’s quietly a good player. I don’t know whether he’s actually quite good enough to win a major yet, but he’s a good

player. He might go closer to winning a major this year.” Lowry’s form in the majors this year has been curious. At the Masters, the Offaly native was firmly in contention entering the final round, but had a horror 80 on Sunday to blow any chances of securing the green jacket. At the PGA Championship, a final round of -2 saw Lowry finish in a tie for 44th position. Both Lowry and McIlroy will return to action this week at the Memorial Championship, hosted by

Jack Nicklaus. Click here to sign up to our sport newsletter, bringing you the top stories and biggest headlines from Ireland and beyond
