Chris Wood fires Forest onto front foot in Europa League battle

Chris Wood’s penalty helped Nottingham Forest take a 1-0 lead over Aston Villa as the Europa League semi-final heads to the second leg.

A single moment changed the tone at the City Ground, with Chris Wood striking emphatically from the spot to swing Nottingham Forest onto the front foot in their Europa League semi-final against Aston Villa.

Forest converted their advantage into a 1-0 first-leg lead, putting them 90 minutes away from a first European final in 46 years. The night also underlined the scale of the turnaround at the club, with Forest now riding a run of nine matches unbeaten across all competitions.

In this context, the result matters because semi-finals are often decided by nerve as much as momentum, and Villa will surely arrive next week ready to press for an immediate reply.

Villa started the match on the front, creating the first meaningful opening in the ninth minute when Youri Tielemans tested Stefan Ortega from range. Ortega then had to react again just before the half-hour mark as Morgan Rogers threatened on the counter.

As Forest grew in confidence, big chances arrived but did not always break their way.. In the 33rd minute, Emiliano Martinez produced a remarkable intervention when Igor Jesus looked set to score after Elliot Anderson’s pass set up the moment, scooping the ball away just before it could cross the line.

After the restart, both goalkeepers continued to shape the contest. Ortega made another key save, while Villa also threatened through slick play, including a moment where Ollie Watkins’s effort landed in Ortega’s hands after a deflection.

The decisive phase arrived with about 20 minutes left, when Forest were awarded a penalty.. A cross from Morgan Gibbs-White was initially expected to go out of play, only for Omari Hutchinson to hook it back, leading to a VAR check.. With the decision upheld, Wood stepped up and sent Martinez the wrong way, sending Forest ahead.

Villa did not throw everything forward in search of an instant equaliser, but they still had chances late on. Tielemans came close in stoppage time, firing over from a quick breakaway as Forest held on to secure the lead.

This matters for what comes next because a narrow advantage is rarely comfortable in European ties, and Villa’s reputation for turning home pressure into attacking opportunity will keep the contest alive.

Meanwhile, attention is also turning to the other semi-final, where Crystal Palace moved closer to a European final after a 3-1 first-leg win over Shakhtar Donetsk, sparked by Ismaila Sarr’s rapid opener and extended by goals after the break.
