2ID backs US alert vs Fil-Am involvement in NPA conflict
Philippine Army 2ID welcomed a US security alert and NaFFAA’s stance against Filipino-American involvement in NPA-linked conflicts, citing risks to communities.
A security warning aimed at protecting overseas Filipinos has drawn a direct response from the Philippine Army’s 2nd Infantry Division, as officials emphasized the dangers of being pulled into armed conflicts.
In a statement issued on Friday, the 2ID welcomed the US Embassy’s alert and the position of the National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA) that discourages Filipino-Americans from joining armed groups in the Philippines.. The 2ID said the message matters because misleading narratives can place people in harm’s way.
Meanwhile, the US Embassy had previously signaled that military operations against the New People’s Army (NPA) had intensified, pointing to security risks in areas including Mindoro, Negros, Leyte, and Samar.. The advisory underscored potential consequences for anyone perceived to be linked to armed groups, including arrest and the possibility of injury or death.
For 2ID, the core takeaway is about prevention rather than reaction. When communities know the risks early, it becomes harder for recruitment attempts to succeed.
NaFFAA also expressed concern over the loss of Filipino and Filipino-American lives and said meaningful change should come through peaceful dialogue and lawful advocacy. The 2ID said these statements align with an ongoing concern about recruitment efforts reaching into overseas communities.
The division referenced previous incidents in Mindoro involving Filipino-Americans, naming Cristina Pasion and Chantal Anicoche. In this context, 2ID highlighted that overseas connections can be exploited to steer individuals toward armed involvement.
“Beyond the headlines, this is really about safeguarding people who may not fully grasp the situation on the ground,” a spokesperson for the 2ID said in effect through the division’s quoted remarks, pointing to the role of awareness and coordination.
Major General Ramon Zagala said the US advisory is important for protecting individuals from being misled.. He described how people, particularly those from overseas, can be put in danger through false or deceptive messaging, and said the military’s priority is ensuring communities stay informed and protected from armed group influence.
Zagala added that stronger awareness and coordination between host countries and Filipino communities abroad are needed to reduce the risk of similar incidents.. He also framed discouraging involvement in armed conflict as a safeguard meant to prevent further loss of life and to reinforce lawful, peaceful engagement.
In the end, the 2ID tied its remarks to broader security goals in Mindoro, stressing that communities should be able to live safely while development continues, without Filipinos being exposed to harm through armed conflict or exploitation.
