Cartel leader detained in Mexico as weapons, drugs and tigers seized

Northeast Cartel – A cartel-linked leader was arrested in Mexico, with authorities recovering guns, drugs, cash and seven tigers, as cross-border crackdown intensifies.
A cartel-linked leader has been detained in northern Mexico in an operation that also turned up weapons, drugs, cash and seven tigers, underscoring how violent organized crime continues to operate on both sides of the U.S. border.
Officials said the arrest took place in the state of Nuevo León and targeted José Antonio Cortes Huerta. 39. who they described as the leader of a cell affiliated with the Northeast Cartel.. Mexico’s security minister. Omar Garcia Harfuch. said the case grew out of an investigation following the seizure of a boat in Tamaulipas.
Along with Cortes Huerta, authorities detained a woman identified as Rosario Flores Alemán, 41. In the same operation, officials reported recovering an array of items they associated with the criminal network, including firearms, narcotics and cash.
Mexican authorities said they seized unidentified narcotics, cash, 10 guns, 11 vehicles and six motorcycles, as well as seven tigers.. Exotic animals have long appeared in cartel-related mythology and tactics. including as symbols of dominance. and in some past reports as part of alleged intimidation or punishment.
The arrest comes as U.S.. and Mexican officials have continued focusing on the cartel threats that funnel drugs through border corridors.. A 2023 U.S.. indictment referenced by authorities said some victims tied to a faction of the Sinaloa cartel were “fed dead or alive to tigers. ” pointing to the broader pattern of cruelty that prosecutors say accompanies these criminal groups.
Authorities also said the materials recovered in the Nuevo León operation are connected to Roberto Blanco Cantu. known as “El Señor de los Buques” (“The Lord of the Ships”).. Officials described Blanco Cantu as a majority shareholder of the logistics company Mefra Fletes and said he is accused of fuel smuggling. while being affiliated with the Northeast Cartel.
The Northeast Cartel. or Cártel del Noreste. is described as a remnant of the Zetas and is based in Tamaulipas.. In 2025. the Trump administration designated the group as a foreign terrorist organization. a move that expanded the legal and enforcement framework used to target its leadership and networks.
Last month, the U.S. issued sanctions against three individuals and two casinos over alleged ties to the cartel, signaling continued pressure through financial restrictions aimed at disrupting revenue streams and operational support.
According to the U.S.. Treasury Department. the Northeast Cartel is involved in trafficking illegal drugs along the border. including fentanyl. crystal meth. heroin and cocaine.. The Treasury Department has also described what it called a “campaign of terror on the border. ” tying intimidation and violence to the cartel’s effort to maintain control of trafficking routes.
In that description. the Treasury Department said the cartel uses terror-fueled influence in the region to control drug trafficking and human smuggling routes. and to bribe politicians and journalists.. It also said the group extorts local businesses and shipments moving to and from the United States. including at the busiest inland point of entry for U.S.. trade.
The detention in Mexico arrives amid an intensified crackdown by Mexican security forces on cartel organizations. occurring alongside rising attention from Washington.. The report stated the latest arrest reflects a broader effort to disrupt criminal operations that benefit from cross-border networks.
Last month. the Mexican military captured one of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel’s top leaders in the northwest of the country. reported to have been carried out two months after the killing of the cartel’s leader known as “El Mencho.” Officials said the campaign also included a separate operation in which Mexican soldiers captured three of the closest allies of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman’s brother. with support described as coming from U.S.. intelligence.
Taken together. the arrests point to a sustained security push focused not only on senior figures but also on cells and support networks.. The presence of weapons. vehicles and large quantities of drugs and cash in the reported seizure adds to the picture of a logistics-heavy criminal model. while the recovered tigers—however shocking—reflect how some cartel ecosystems are reported to blend intimidation. symbolism and extreme violence.
For communities along the border. authorities’ efforts to dismantle groups such as the Northeast Cartel may have wider implications for drug availability. smuggling routes and local security.. With U.S.. sanctions and designations reinforcing pressure from Washington. Mexico’s continuing operations are likely to remain a central part of how both governments aim to curb the flow of illicit goods and the coercive tactics used to sustain them.
